ABSTRACTS FROM THE ASSUMPTION PIONEER, 1850-1852 (Published every Saturday) by Goldie B. Legendre (The Assumption Pioneer was founded on 8 Sept. 1850 by EUGENE SUPERVIELLE and F. A. DEVILLIERS and was not published from 1856-1876.) 6 Oct. 1850 CHARLES TOUPS and SYLVANIE AYSEN were involved in an argument at a dance when AYSEN stabbed TOUPS in the left side. TOUPS died the next day. The MARY FOLEY again begins her voyages between Donaldsonville and New Orleans. 20 Oct. 1850 In Brule des Olivier on CAMILLE NICOLAS' farm, a 12 lb. 7 oz. potato was grown. MR. JULES COMEAUX of Paincourtville can prove it is true because he now has it in his possession. 15 Dec. 1850 JOSEPH TUREAUD of New Orleans was married to EVELINA TRUXILLO of Assumption on Saturday night, 14 Dec. 1850, at the residence of CAPT. At COL. PUGH in Lafourche Interior, 3 workers died within a few hours. Ten Negroes died at PITT & ROSS, 1 at MATTERS, 1 at ROBERTSON. In Ascension many died at M. MC COLLUM, age 4 at the most, fell into the bayou recently two arpents from the Star Coffee House and his body has not been recovered. 11 May 1851 ACHILLE BARRE is running for assessor of St. John the Baptist Parish, and NUMA MARTIN of Assumption is a candidate for coroner. CHOLERA - Last Tuesday, 24 Negroes died on ROSS and PITRE Plantation and so did MR. ROSS. MR. ROBERTSON lost 27 slaves. Both of these plantations are below Thibodaux. In Assumption there were a few cases reported on FOLEY Plantation, but they have improved. There were some very young children who died. HENRI VIALLON died in St. John the Baptist Parish on Wed. 18 June 1851. 6 July 1851 As we announced last Wednesday, TOM, the Negro of ROBERT MANY, appeared before JUDGE J. B. FERCHAUD, J. JOHN the Irishman, well-known for a long time around these parts and at the place of MARIUS ALBAGNAC, froze to death during the night of the 20 January. He was found a few arpents from the coroner's house, 4 miles below Napoleonville on the right bank of the bayou. An unknown Irishman was found frozen to death on the canal road and another near Assumption Church in Plattenville. A Negro belonging to MRS. OLIVIER LEBLANC succumbed to the cold on the road where MR. COURTADE's store leads to Brule St. John the Baptist. Detained in the parish jail: HENRY, belonging to RICHARD BUTLER of Grand Caillou, not very black, 2 upper teeth missing, about age 42-44, bearded, and around each arm the circle of a little broken band. JEAN BAPTISTE, speaking French and English, says he belongs to WILLIAM ACY of Assumption, 5'5" tall, about 24-25 years old. 29 Jan. 1852 A fire at Belle River Sunday night destroyed the sugar house of THADEUS KNIGHT. He had just completed grinding, and now all is lost. Succession sale of JEAN BAPTISTE PITRE, JR., filed 14 Feb. 1852. 7 Mar. 1852 There was an explosion on the steamer Mary Kingsland yesterday at 6 A.M. in front of Poverty Point Plantation. The names of the victims are: CAPT. PHILIPS, slightly wounded; GEORGE HENRY, second mechanic, dead; GEORGE SWILER, pilot of the Balise, dead; WILSON, a crewman, dead; JAMES WATTERS, fireman, dead; two other unnamed firemen, dead; two unnamed crewmen, wounded. 11 Mar. 1852 The five-year-old daughter of MR. SPARKS fell into the canal last Saturday and drowned. The young Negro caring for her was too frightened to report the tragedy immediately. The body was not recovered until six hours later. A few days ago, a Negro working for MR.
