ABSTRACTS FROM THE ASSUMPTION PIONEER, 1907 (Published every Saturday) by Goldie B. Legendre 20 April 1907 After a lingering illness of several years, NELSON AUCOIN died in New Orleans on Monday, April 8th., at 4 A.M. He was interred in Labadieville the next day. The deceased was 45 years of age and was residing at Norah, a few miles below this place. He was an overseer on J. T. BADEAUX's Plantation. He leaves a wife, a son, and a daughter. (From Lafourche Democrat) Thursday evening at 7 o'clock, SOSTHENE HEBERT, age 69 years 3 months and 17 days, a planter and Confederate veteran, died at his home at Brulee St. Vincent from an attack of paralysis. He was married to ALICE HEBERT, daughter of the late VENANT HEBERT of St. Vincent, and they had 3 daughters and 7 sons. His only surviving children are HONORINE HEBERT, LYDIE HEBERT, DELMAR HEBERT, CAMILLE HEBERT, HENRY HEBERT, and AUBERT HEBERT. Funeral services were held Friday evening at St. Elizabeth Church. There is an article about JAMES MATHERNE, who has charge of the Cumberland Telephone & Telegraph Company at Napoleonville. LEO BARRILLEAUX and MARIE LEONARD were married last Tuesday evening at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. A grand dance celebrated the nuptuals. The bride is a resident of French Plantation, and the groom is a citizen of Labadieville. (From Lafourche Comet) Many Knights of Columbus went to Donaldsonville Wednesday to attend the funeral of CAPT. J. PROSPER LANDRY, a K. of C. and Confederate veteran. 27 April 1907 CLAIRVILLE JOSEPH THIBODAUX of Lafourche and MAY WALTER, daughter of A. B. WALTER of this town, were married at 11:30 A.M. at the bride's home. The best man was LARRY LEFORT of Lafourche Crossing. The bride's sister, MARGARET WALTER, was maid of honor. Among the guests were the bride's sister, MRS. GUS TOUSSEL of Lafayette, and ALINE THIBODAUX and LOUISE THIBODAUX, sisters of the groom. MRS. NELSON AUCOIN and family of Lockport have moved to this town. She is the mother of W. J. AUCOIN, the clerk at J. F. MUFFREY'S store. 4 May 1907 Thursday afternoon at his home in this town, THOMAS J. DYER, aged 55 years, 1 month and 11 days, died after several weeks of illness. MR. DYER was born March 21, 1852, in Napoleonville. He began as a carpenter, after which he became an overseer, and from that he started in the mercantile business, the latter he continued until his death. He leaves a wife, nee NELLIE DURNO, and the following children: DURNO DYER, the bookkeeper of Reserve Plantation; MRS. (DR.) HALL LEBLANC of White Castle; JESSIE DYER; EDNA DYER; THOMAS DYER; ELVYNA DYER; NELLIE DYER; and DAVID DYER. Funeral services were from Christ Episcopal Church, Napoleonville. 11 May 1907 "Gulf Coast Inventors" column - L. BOUDREAUX, Thibodaux, a rail joint; and A. E. LEBLANC, Houma, a land marker. Last Sunday afternoon, DR. FULTON ROGERS died at his home in this town. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 3 P.M. at St. Napoleon Church. He was born at Holmesville, La. in Rapides Parish on September 3, 1857, the son of VASTITUS ROGERS and LOGAN LOUVINIA HOOPER. He had one half brother, ALEX MASON, and a brother, MACKIE ROGERS, both dead for some time. DR. ROGERS was Lafourche Parish coroner 1874-1878 and Assumption coroner 1892-1896. His first marriage was to ALICE SPRINGER of Thibodaux, who died in 1881, by whom were born the following children: MRS. ED RICHE, MRS. CHARLES H. OWEN, FULTON ROGERS, and MRS. JOSEPH WHEELER, who died March 16, 1907. The second marriage was to FANNY MAY WEBSTER on October 15, 1884, by whom were born the following children: WEBSTER ROGERS, EARLE ROGERS (who died an infant of 7 months), FANNY MAY ROGERS, and MABEL ROGERS. 18 May 1907 ABNER A. FOLSE, Napoleonville attorney born in 1870, whose father moved to New Orleans three years ago, will soon be leaving us to join his father and make his home there. On Monday night at 11:30, MRS. ALEXANDER CHAUFFE, nee MARY ORY, died at her home a few miles below this town. She was 68 years of age. She leaves the following children: EMIGE CHAUFFE, PAUL CHAUFFE, MISS MAMIE CHAUFFE, MRS. GUS ROBERTSON and the following brothers and sisters: LEZIN ORY, PLACIDE ORY, FELICIEN ORY, and MRS. LABICHE. Funeral services were held from St. Napoleon Church. DAVE R. JOE ACOSTA, nee TALBOT, died Wednesday at her home at Attakapas Canal after a long illness. Deceased leaves a husband and 7 children. She was the mother of MRS. DAVE R. BURNS and MRS. BEN BOUDREAUX of the Canal, and a sister-in-law of MRS. R. A. GEHRINGER of this town. Services were from the Canal Chapel. The engagement of SARA TALBOT to ALCEE M. GUILLOT is announced. The wedding will take place on Tuesday, June 18th., at 9 A.M. at Assumption Church in Plattenville. [From 22 June: Her brother THEOPHILE TALBOT escorted her to the altar. Her sister LUCY TALBOT was bridesmaid, and FELIX AUCOIN was groomsman. She is the granddaughter of MR. & MRS. CHARLES BOUDREAUX, with whom she lived.] DR. AMEDE MARY has come to make his home here as formerly. 1 June 1907 JAMES AUGUSTUS LANIER, a former citizen of this parish and a foremost businessman of New Orleans, died Wednesday at 10:30 P. M. He was a native of Mississippi. His father, DR. J. S. LANIER, served in the Confederate Army as a surgeon. At the time of his death, he was president and manager of the Louisiana Cooperage Company, manager of the Louisiana Petroleum & Oil Company, and director of the Southern Improvement and Ferry Company. About 12 years ago, he married LILA MONNOT, the daughter of E. L. MONNOT, one of our prominent sugar planters. He is survived by 4 sons, 1 daughter, and his wife. Funeral services were held from Christ Church, Napoleonville, on Friday. A Mexican who went by the name of CHARLEY REED, aged about 33 years, took a dose of carbolic acid Wednesday and died about 9 P.M. He was employed by the Southern Pacific RR Co., the section supervised by ROBERT STEPHENS. He lived in the coach reserved for section workers on the switch between Trinity and Poverty Point Plantations. The scholarship to Tulane University was awarded to OSCAR SUNDBERY, the son of E. SUNDBERY, president of the Napoleonville Cypress Company. BIRTHS: MR. & MRS. HENRY DUPRE of Belle Rose are the proud parents of a baby girl born on Thursday. MR. & MRS. C. S. SIMONEAUX of St. Vincent are the happy parents of a sweet little daughter born last Monday. Thursday morning at about 2:30, THEO LASSEIGNE, a night watchman at Thibodaux, shot and killed LEO BERGERON near the Thibodaux bridge. It seems they got into a fight over some trifle, and the result was the death of BERGERON, aged 19. He was buried Friday morning in St. Joseph Cemetery. 8 June 1907 ANATOLE LANDRY, aged 84 years, 10 months, died at his home in Klotzville last Saturday evening. Born and reared in this parish, he was a successful sugar planter. He leaves two children: MRS. FRANKLIN DALFERES of upper Assumption and PIERRE LANDRY, cashier at the Bank of Paincourtville and member of the school board. He is also survived by a sister, MRS. LEON GAUTHREAUX of this parish. The funeral was held at St. Elizabeth Church. MR. & MRS. EDWARD ALLEMAN of Brule Longvue are the proud parents of a baby boy born Saturday. HENRY PARENTON of Plattenville, assistant in the tonsorial parlor of GEORGE MARTIN, was married Wednesday at 6 P. M. to MATHILDE COMPEAUX of Plattenville at Assumption Church. The little son of MR. & MRS. LEON DELAUNE has died from an attack of the measles. He was four months and seven days old. Funeral services were held at St. Philomena. (No date given) The anniversary memorial service for the soul of NORBERT RODRIGUE will take place at St. Napoleon Church on Wednesday, June 12th., at 8 o'clock. (Next issue reports the date changed to June 22nd.) 15 June 1907 ADAM TRICHE left Wednesday for Waynesboro, Miss., to accept a position with the Cumberland Telephone Company. JOSEPH MARKS of this parish was married last Wednesday to JULIA BOURG of Thibodaux at St. Joseph's Church at 6:30 P. M. ALVIN MARKS, brother of the groom, was best man, and SIDNA BOURG was bridesmaid. The bride is a sister of JOSEPH BOURG of this town. The groom is one of the directors of the Unity Mercantile Company. The engagement of EDWIN L. CAILLOUET to ANTOINETTE MATHERNE, popular young people of Thibodaux, is announced. The wedding will be at St. Joseph Church on Wednesday, June 26th. He is the son of JUDGE L. P. CAILLOUET, and she is the daughter of MRS. A. J. MATHERNE of Thibodaux and sister of JAMES MATHERNE, manager of the local telephone exchange. 22 June 1907 SAMUEL A. GIROIRE and ALICE BOUDREAUX of Paincourtville were married on Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, the REV. B. BRANCHE officiating. BIRTHS: MR. & MRS. F. J. RODRIGUE are the parents of a little girl born last Sunday. MR. & MRS. OSCAR BERGERON are the parents of a baby boy born last Tuesday. MR. & MRS. LEZIN ORY, formerly of this parish and now living in Lions, La., wish to announce that their daughter, CORINE MARIE ORY, will marry DR. LOUIS A. CABOCHE June 26th. in New Orleans at St. Augustine Church. MR. & MRS. PIERRE DUPRE of Elm Hall lost their baby, LOUISE DUPRE, aged 9 months on Thursday, June 13th. 29 June 1907 CLAUDE HIMEL, aged 21 years 7 months and 25 days, the son of DR. & MRS. A. J. HIMEL, died last Sunday in Baton Rouge. The probable cause was apoplexy. Funeral services were held at Labadieville at 4 P. M. For the past two years he had been employed by the dry goods establishment of FARNBACKER & CO. of Baton Rouge. OLIBERT HIDALGO of Assumption and IDA COSSIN of Ascension were married last Sunday by a justice of the peace. Last Wednesday, MRS. RENE DEARBORN, nee LEONEL LAULAND, aged 29, a former resident of this town, died at her home at Baldwin, La. Deceased was a half-sister of ELPHEGE LAULAND and ALCEE LAULAND. The funeral was held at St. Napoleon Church on Thursday with burial at Plattenville. 6 July 1907 MRS. EDGARD B. TEMPLET, nee ANTONIA CABALLERO, aged 46 years and 4 months, died last Wednesday at her home in Donaldsonville. The funeral service and interment took place from Assumption Church Thursday at 11 A.M. She leaves a husband and several children. NICHOLS LOPEZ, a young married man of Attakapas Canal, was killed instantly last Monday. He and his brother CHAS. LOPEZ and CLABER MARTIN were exploding dynamite in Lake Verret with the object of catching a mess of fish. The explosion occurred before they could pull the boat away. MR. LOPEZ leaves a wife and child. We are sorry to report the sudden death of MRS. FRANK DUPRE, aged 38 years, which occurred in New Orleans last Friday night at Charity Hospital, where she had undergone an operation. Her body was taken to Port Barrow and from there to St. Elizabeth Church, where the service and burial were held. 13 July 1907 Succession of JEAN LARRE and his wife CLEOPHIDE MOLLERE, presented by EUGENE LARRE, administrator of the estate. With regret we chronicle the death of MR. & MRS. L. P. LABARTHE's daughter, MARIE CELINE LABARTHE, aged 16 months, from pneumonia, on Monday, July 8th. The son of MR. & MRS. ANT. PINTADO of Elm Hall, JAMES LINDEN PINTADO, aged 18 years 11 months 3 days, died in New Orleans last week. The young man had been living in the city for the past 6 years. Funeral services were held in New Orleans with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. The death of MRS. HENRY E. MAURY, nee BEATRICE LANDRY, aged 22 years, which occurred last Monday at her mother's Nottoway home near Bayou Goula was a shock to her friends. The funeral service and burial took place from St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Paincourtville, on Tuesday morning. 20 July 1907 MRS. A. J. LIRETTE, who is a guest at the home of her mother, MRS. LOUIS BELTAU of Thibodaux, is the mother of a girl, her first born. - Lafourche Comet ISABELLE Z. LEBLANC, daughter of DR. & MRS. H. LEBLANC of Paincourtville, died last Saturday at Waveland, Miss. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Paincourtville with burial at Plattenville. The child was 5 years 6 months of age. She died at the residence of MRS. JOSEPH E. LEBLANC, her grandmother. 27 July 1907 MR. & MRS. PHILIP BARBIER of Plattenville are the happy parents of a big baby boy born to them July 17th. Advertisement - Board and Rooms - MRS. KATE SHELDON MC CHAIN. 3 August 1907 DR. PAUL KLOTZ, a former citizen of Klotzville, was married in New Orleans this week to MISS VIVIAN LEACH. BIRTHS: MR. & MRS. LEOPOLD ROUSSEL of Locust Grove are the proud parents of a little son born to them last Wednesday. MR. & MRS. DESIRE LEBLANC are the parents of a baby boy, their second born. HENRY FRITZINGER, a native of Thibodaux, had his throat cut by a barber during an altercation and died a few hours later. The incident occurred last Friday night in Terrebonne Parish. The barber, L. E. CLARLIVILLE, claimed it was self-defense. HENRY FRITZINGER ran a livery stable in this town several years ago. He was the nephew of the late HENRY HOFFMAN, the well-known livery man of Thibodaux. Friday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock, MR. ANATOLE DELAUNE, aged 55 years, died at his home at Bertie after several weeks' illness. He was in the planting and mercantile business. Deceased leaves five children and the following brothers: EDGARD DELAUNE, ULGERE DELAUNE, OSCAR DELAUNE, and SYLVESTRE DELAUNE. Funeral services were held this evening from St. Napoleon Church. MAURICE M. HANLON, a prominent planter of Bayou Goula, died on Friday. He was born in 1835 in Faithleg, County Waterport, Ireland, and came to America in 1851 with his sister, MRS. A. MOREL, a resident of this town. He was married to DONATHILDE BOUDREAUX, from which union were born: EDWARD S. HANLON, JAMES D. HANLON, ALPHONSE HANLON, MRS. JOS. SUPPLE, and MRS. (DR.) A. A. ALLAIN. He was preceded to the grave by his wife and one son, PHIL S. HANLON. 17 August 1907 The body of CLARENCE MAYVILLE, aged 9, was discovered floating in the pond at Napoleon Cypress Company's saw mill on Tuesday morning. He was the son of FRANK MAYVILLE, an employee of the company and formerly of Wisconsin. The boy had not been seen since Monday when he went to bring breakfast to his father at the mill. The remains were taken to the home of MR. AL LEWINS. The funeral was held Tuesday evening from St. Napoleon Church. BIRTHS: MR. & MRS. MOTLEY are the parents of a baby boy born last Wednesday. MR. & MRS. E. D. GIANELLONI also welcomed a boy on Wednesday morning. MRS. ANDREE HEBERT died last Sunday at the home of her son-in-law, ISRAEL VEGAS. Funeral services were held at St. Elizabeth Church, Paincourtville. 24 August 1907 A girl was born to MR. & MRS. T. S. COMEAUX on Monday last. 7 September 1907 TRASIMOND BOUDREAUX, aged 69 years 6 months 6 days, died Friday morning at his home at Avoca after an illness of two years. MR. BOUDREAUX was a Confederate veteran. He leaves a wife and the following children: EMELIE BOUDREAUX, MARIE BOUDREAUX, JEAN BOUDREAUX, EMILE BOUDREAUX, and EVARISTE BOUDREAUX. Funeral services were held Friday evening from St. Philomena in Labadieville. BIRTHS: Last Tuesday, a sweet little girl was born to MR. & MRS. E. M. LAULAND. MR. & MRS. CLAY ROGER of Bellewood are the proud parents of a baby boy, born to them on Thursday. DR. & MRS. HENRY LEBLANC are the proud parents of twins - a boy and a girl - born on Friday. MRS. A. D. HERNANDEZ of Belle Alliance, La. announces the wedding of her daughter, EMILY HERNANDEZ, to MANUEL RUIZ of Belle Alliance on September 9, 1907, at the home of the bride. OCTAVE SIMONEAUX, a former resident of this parish, died Wednesday, at his home in St. James (Parish). Deceased was a brother of MRS. SIMON GIANELLONI of Paincourtville and a brother-in-law of MR. LYNCH ROBERTSON of Laura. His burial was Thursday in the Confederate tomb in Donaldsonville. MRS. HENRY BOUDREAUX, nee ELODIE PITRE, aged 18 years 7 months 2 days, died Monday at her home at Bertie. Deceased was the wife of HENRY BOUDREAUX, a carpenter at Bertie. The funeral was held Tuesday from St. Napoleon Church. A pontoon bridge has been recently put in at Plattenville by MR. VILEOR BARBIER. GEORGE DUGAS, assistant cashier at the Paincourtville bank, was married last Wednesday, September 4th., to CATHERINE CHRISTIAN, the daughter of JOHN CHRISTIAN, formerly of this parish. The ceremony was solemnized at the Catholic church at McDonoughville, and the reception was at Paincourtville. 14 September 1907 EUGENE CHAUVIN, a popular planter of this parish, was married last Tuesday to ANNIE MUNSON, sister of MESSRS. E. P. MUNSON and A. R. MUNSON. The wedding was in New Orleans. WEBB CLEMENT and NOELIE LAULAND of Attakapas Canal were married at the Canal chapel Tuesday evening. FLOYD BIGELOW DEAN of Boston and MISS LAURENCE MUNSON of this parish were married Tuesday morning at the home of the bride, REV. FATHER L'ANGLAIS officiating. They will reside in Boston, where MR. DEAN teaches music at the Boston Conservatory of Music. The bride is the daughter of the late HENRY MUNSON of Enola Plantation. 21 September 1907 MRS. JOHN G. GUERIN, nee MARY LEFTWICH, a native of Assumption Parish, was buried on Wednesday afternoon at Labadieville. MRS. GUERIN left here about 25 years ago, moving to Waco, Tx., where she was until March of this year. Then she went to Fort Smith., Ark., where she died September 13th. at the home of her daughter, MRS. HENRY VESEY. JOHN GUERIN, her only son, who is prominent in mining circles in Rosebud, Nevada, and MRS. HENRY VESEY, whose husband is an electrician at Fort Smith, accompanied the body here. MRS. JOHN FERRICK of St. Paul, Kansas, the other daughter of the deceased, was unable to travel and remained at Fort Smith. MRS. GUERIN has one brother, AUG. J. LEFTWICH, living in Waco, Tx. [Note: "Personals Column" reports that JOHN GUERIN is from Colorado, and another column writes that he is from Rosebud, Ark. ] MISS ROSA BREAUX of Attakapas Canal will be married on October 1st. to MR. PHILIP BESSE of Rayne, La. The ceremony will be celebrated at the Canal chapel. CLIFTON MARQUETTE and SUSIE RUMPH will be married on Wednesday, October 2nd., at 5:30 P.M. Friends are invited to attend. MR. & MRS. EDGARD DELAUNE announce the birth of a baby boy, born to them last week. 28 September 1907 Cards are out announcing the marriage of MISS NELLIE MUNSON to MR. AUBREY BARTLETT, wedding to take place at Christ Church, Napoleonville, Tuesday, October 2nd., at 7 P.M. ARTHUS LANDRY of Klotzville died at his home yesterday evening after an illness of 3 years. He leaves six children, viz.: MRS. CLAY BLUMFIELD, JOSEPHINE LANDRY, EMMA LANDRY, CHARLIE LANDRY, RAOUL LANDRY, and ATLAS LANDRY. The funeral was held at St. Elizabeth Church this evening. ALFRED DELAUNE, aged 17 years, the son of the late ANATOLE DELAUNE, died yesterday evening at his home at Bertie. The young man was stricken with typhoid fever a few days before his father's death. The funeral will be held this evening at St. Napoleon Church. 5 October 1907 ALBERT F. TETE, a native of Assumption, died at his home at Rayne, La. At the time of his death, he was manager of lands and farms of the Vermillion Development Company. 12 October 1907 Succession of ROBERT M. MOORE - No. 6037 - filed October 7, 1907 MRS. EDWARD VIVES, aged 72 years, a native of Assumption and for many years a resident of Napoleonville, died Sunday morning at her home in Houma. She leaves her husband and the following children: MRS. SCOTT WILLIAMS of Thibodaux, JOSEPH VIVES, MRS. (DR.) E. THIBODAUX, MRS. LEMON, EDWARD VIVES, JR., and BERNADETTE VIVES. Burial was at the Plattenville Catholic cemetery on Monday. MR. & MRS. MOSES WEIL went to Dallas this week to be present at the funeral of their father, MR. SOL WEIL, who died at that place. MR. & MRS. Funeral services were held at St. Napoleon Church, with burial at Plattenville. MRS. JOHN GEHRINGER, nee MARY ANNA VOGEL, aged 80 years and 2 months, died last Monday morning at 2:30 o'clock at her home in this town. MRS. GEHRINGER was born in Bavaria, Germany, and came to America when she was 16. She has lived in Napoleonville since 1864. She leaves the following children: MISS LIZZIE GEHRINGER, POSTMASTER RUDOLPH A. GEHRINGER, and MRS. ELPHEGE LAULAND. The funeral was held at Christ (Episcopal) Church in this town. BIRTHS: A bouncing baby boy was born to MR. & MRS. PHIL BERGERON last Thursday. MR. & MRS. LOUIS BLANCHARD of Belle Rose are the happy parents of a baby girl. 2 November 1907 Last night at 7:15 o'clock, MRS. CAESAR NANETTI, nee ANASTASIE RODRIGUE, aged 83 years 4 months 10 days., died on St. Thomas Plantation at the home of MRS. ALCEE F. DELAUNE, her niece. Deceased was a sister of MRS. AMADEO BLANCHARD, SR., MRS. VICKNAIR, MRS. THEODULE CHAUFFE, EDWARD RODRIGUE, and TELESPHORE RODRIGUE, all of this parish. Funeral services will take place this evening at St. Napoleon Catholic Church with burial at Plattenville. We regret to learn of the death of DETTA BERGERON, about 4 or 5 years old, daughter of MR. & MRS. SIDNEY BERGERON of Laura, which occurred last night. The child was ill six days with diphtheria. MR. & MRS. CLAY ROGER lost their youngest child, aged about 5 weeks, last Sunday. The funeral was held Monday morning at St. Napoleon Church. MR. JOSEPH RICHARD, who was living with his son-in-law, VAL GOETZ of Elm Hall, died last Sunday night after a few days' illness. The funeral was held in Donaldsonville on Monday. A daughter was born last Sunday to MR. & MRS. A. C. SIMONEAUX of St. Vincent. 9 November 1907 ULGERE PREJEAN died at his home on the west bank of Bayou Lafourche about 5 miles below Donaldsonville last Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock. Mr. Prejean was 81 years and 8 months old and death was due to old age. The funeral was held in Donaldsonville Wednesday afternoon with services and burial at the Catholic Church. Besides a wife, he leaves three sons - ELPHEGE PREJEAN, JOSEPH PREJEAN, and S. PREJEAN and four daughters - MRS. JOSEPH BEILLE, MRS. ADAM RUIZ, MRS. EMILE BOURGEOIS, and MRS. MC CHAIN and family have moved to New Orleans. 16 November 1907 LUCY THOMPSON, the daughter of MR. & MRS. C. D. THOMPSON, died last Wednesday at age one year. HOLLOWAY, bookkeeper at the Forgery Camp of the Jeanerette Lumber Co. across Lake Verret was shot to death last Thursday evening by BURL FORGERY, son of CAPT. E. P. FORGERY, general manager of the camp. BURL FORGERY surrendered to SHERIFF EDGARD AUCOIN, claiming it was self-defense. TOM HOLLOWAY was well-known in this town, as he has visited here frequently. ARMOGENE DAIGLE died at his home on Armelise Plantation last Sunday at 12 o'clock. He leaves a wife and one child Funeral services were at St. Elizabeth Church on Monday at 2 o'clock. 30 November 1907 MRS. MATHILDE GUEPET and daughter, ALICE GUEPET, residents of our town for many years, have moved to Algiers, La., where they will make their home with ARTHUR GUEPET, who is employed by the Southern Pacific Company.
