Biographical sketch of ABEL LANDRY, candidate for sheriff of Assumption: MR. ABEL LANDRY was born one mile below Napoleonville on his grandfather's small farm, August 20, 1865. [DBR gives year as 1866.] When a child, his father, JUSTIN LANDRY, removed to Klotzville with his family, where he engaged in the sugar cane industry. After failing in business, Mr. Landry sold his plantation and removed to Paincourtville. ABEL LANDRY was the fourth son of the Landry family, and when his father came to Paincourtville, he was a lad of six years. At this tender age, Abel began to help his brothers to earn a living for the family. His first occupation was that of selling cakes and pies. When he was strong enough for heavier work, he went into the plantation fields, where he worked as a laborer. What time he could spare, he went to school, getting, in all, about 4 years at a private school. In the year 1886, he came to Napoleonville with his mother, sister and brothers. He secured the position of mail carrier between Napoleonville and Donaldsonville. He remained in this position for 8 years, winning for himself hundreds of friends along the route he covered. In 1881, he married MISS ONEZILE BOUDREAUX, daughter of MR. CHARLES BOUDREAUX, one of Assumption's most prosperous and successful sugar planters. After giving up the mail carrier business, he embarked in the livery business, and after years of industry and untiring efforts, he worked himself up to the present position he occupies today. He was appointed postmaster at Napoleonville during MC KINLEY's first administration. Mr. Landry was urged by his friends to become a candidate for sheriff... and he has taken for his chief deputy MR. EWD. O. LALANDE. ...ABEL LANDRY sent this announcement to every voter ... "I wish to state that MR. EDWARD O. LALANDE will be my chief deputy, and together we appeal to every voter who believes that no set of men should constitute themselves the dictators of a free people." He was born in this parish a little over thirty-six years ago, was reared in this parish and received his education in the public and private schools of Napoleonville. He began his public career at an early age and starting in the humblest way, he has climbed to his present position. As the parish treasurer, mayor of the town, and secretary of the State Senate, he has made a capable officer in every sense of the term. PHILIP H. GILBERT has been identified with the parish administration for more than 8 years. He began the study of law in 1903 and was graduated at the Tulane Law School of New Orleans with the class of 1904-05. From the very first he has been doing a successful legal business, and he has gleaned an experience in his profession which qualifies him to hold the position of district attorney to which he aspires today.
