Paincourtville Catholics Mourn Death of Spiritual Leader. Very Reverend Canon B. Branche, rector of St. Elizabeth's Catholic church at Paincourtville, died in New Orleans at 12:30 o'clock p. m. Tuesday, and his remains were brought to Donaldsonville the following morning on T. & P. train No. 27 arriving at 10:29 o'clock, and from here were conveyed to Paincourtville in the motor hearse of the Wilbert Undertaking Company of Plaquemine. A large number of Father Branche's parishioners had assembled at the local depot to escort the remains of the beloved prelate to Paincourtville, it being reported that there were fifty-two automobiles in the funeral cortege as it departed from this city. Father Branche was born at Ambierle, France, in 1850, and at the age of nineteen years came to this country, where he completed his education. He was ordained a priest in New Orleans in 1870, and in the period of nearly half a century that ensued before his death he occupied a number of important posts and attained a high position in the councils of the church in this state. Nineteen years ago he was sent to Paincourtville as rector of St. Elizabeth's Church, and not long afterward was named a canon of the St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans. He was looked upon in his community not only as the head of the church, but as a real father of his people. It was through his efforts that St. Elizabeth's Church, which had been started before his coming, was completed. Only last year Father Branche had the edifice entirely repainted and beautifully decorated. It was from this church that the funeral was held Thursday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock. A solemn high mass was sung, after which the body of the lamented priest was interred in the nearby cemetery. Prominent priests and churchmen from all over this section of the state attended the obsequies.
