The Cahanin sisters were the daughters of Jules Leopold Cahanin and Philomene Malvina Richard. Jules Leopold Cahanin was the son of Leopold Cahanin and Emelie Contini Sittig. Shortly after Leopold and Emelie were married, Leopold joined the Opelousas Guards and was killed about a month later fighting with Stonewall Jackson at the Battle of Port Republic. Their son, Jules Leopold, had already been conceived and was born several months after his father's death.)
