Col. Wm. R. Mesich, Sheriff elect of Avoyelles parish, was shot and killed 
in New Orleans. Cornelius McMahon, a policeman on the Nicholls force, is 
charged with the murder.

Cornelius McMahon, a member of the Nicholls police force, charged with the 
murder of Wm. R. Mesich, Sheriff elect of Avoyelles parish, died in the 
Orleans parish prison, Monday morning of pneumonia. He confessed to the 
shooting of Mesich, but declared that it was accidental.
