Burial will be in Beauregard Cemetery under direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Visitation is from 3 p.m. today in the funeral home. Mr. Houston died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, in the DeRidder hospital. A lifelong resident of DeRidder, he had served as civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for almost 20 years and was active in the Association of the U.S. Army, serving as local, regional, and national president. Publisher and owner of the Beauregard News for 32 years, he also owned the Vernon Journal and the Kinder Progress and published numerous other publications including the Fort Polk newspaper. He was past president and longtime board member of the Louisiana Press Association and had won numerous awards including the 10-year award for service to forestry and awards from the Louisiana Teachers Association for service to education. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the military affairs committee for 10 years. He was also past president of the Lions Club and a member of the American Legion and VFW chapters. He was Beauregard Citizen of the Year in 1964. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and a past chairman of the Official Board. Survivors include his wife, Gwen S. Houston; one daughter, Shelley Lizotte of Lafayette; and one grandchild. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, the family said. HAYMON, Jeana M. She was an advocate for children who participated in the founding and directing of the Louisiana Head Start Association. She worked for Head Start for 32 years and was the Head Start director for Calcasieu-Beauregard parishes for 29 years. She served on Head Start state, regional and national boards for 18 years. She recently served on the National Head Start Association Personnel Committee. Mrs. Hunter's leadership in the field of early childhood permitted her to review Early Childhood programs in England, Wales, the Republic of China, Zimbabwe and South Africa. She was also affiliated with Southern Association of Children Under Six, Black Child Development Institute, National Association for the Education of Young Children, American Business Women's Association and the National Association for Business and Professional Women. Her work was recognized in the President's Award, Early Childhood, given by President Clinton; participation in the White House Conference on Children during the Carter Administration; the Louisiana Lifetime Achievement Award, Early Childhood, given by Governor Edwin Edwards; the National Head Start Association President's Award, Early Childhood Education; the Louisiana Senate Award, Early Childhood Education; and the Louisiana House of Representative Award, Early Childhood. A native of New Orleans, he had lived in Lake Charles for the past 55 years, where he was a practicing dentist for more than 46 years. Shortly after graduating the Loyola School of Dentistry, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served overseas as a member of the Dental Corps. He was stationed at Chennault Air Base and eventually retired from the Army services as a lieutenant colonel after serving as a dental officer in the Army Reserve. He was one of a number of dentists who actively pursued the establishment of the Louisiana State University Dental School as well as the dental staff of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, and he was a member of the St. Patrick Hospital dental staff. He served as president of the Louisiana Dental Association in 1960 and was a past president of the Louisiana Board of Dentistry. He was a member and past president of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Dental Association, president of the Southwest District Dental Association, and he served on the Legislative and Armed Forces committees of the Louisiana Dental Association. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Dentists in 1979. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontists, the American College of Dentists, the Southwest Louisiana and Louisiana Dental Associations. He was a member of the Lake Charles Kiwanis Club, W.B. Williamson Post 1 of the American Legion, a Mason, a member of the medical staff of the Habibi Temple, and a former member and past president of the Lake Charles High School Fullbackers Club. He was a member of Temple Sinai and served as president of the congregation in 1982. He also served on the Temple's Board of Trustees and as principal of the religious school of the Synagogue, and he taught Sunday School.
