He worked as a driller in the oil fields and retired after 29 years with Boise Cascade as a maintenance mechanic. He was a member of Local 1226, serving as president for 12 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge F&AM 290 in Rosepine. He attended Dia-mond Baptist Church in Rosepine. Survivors include his wife, Gloria C. A Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956, he served on the Military Affairs Committee of the DeRidder/Beauregard Chamber of Commerce, served two terms as Commander of the American Legion Post 27, and was a member of the VFW Post 3619. He was in retail sales and service until his retirement in 1986. He was former co-owner of Highland Growers, president of M-LECT Outdoor Power Equipment Inc., member of Louisiana Retailers' Association and a cattle rancher. He was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Velmer Bertschy Smith; one son, Alan Dale Smith of DeRidder; one brother, Warren Smith of DeRidder; one sister, Lorraine Bacon of Farnsworth, Texas; and two grandchildren. A native of Cape Girardeau, Mo., he lived in Fairview, Okla., and DeRidder, graduating from DeRidder High School in 1939. He earned a bachelor degree in music from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, master's from LSU and doctorate from Florida State University. He was a B-17 pilot in the Air Force during World War II. Dr. Smith was band director at DeRidder High School and Terrebonne High School in Houma before moving to Lake Charles, where he was band director at McNeese 1954-1970, and taught music there until his retirement in 1976. He was internationally known for his books, "Band Music Notes," "March Music Notes," and "March Music Melodies." He was named Professor Emeritus by McNeese. The American Bandmaster Association presented him with an Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial citation and he was given a Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association. He was named to the Louisiana Music Education Association Hall of Fame, made an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary music fraternity at McNeese and most recently named to the McNeese Music Hall of Fame. He was a trumpet layer and historian in the Lake Charles Community Band. He was a member of St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. Survivors include his wife, Aline Jackson Smith; two daughters, Linda Dennis of Big Lake and Pam Smith of New York; two brothers, the Rev. Irving L. In 1993, the Beauregard CowBelles sponsored her to be honored as Life Member of Louisiana Cattle Women, which is the highest honor bestowed on a member. She was a member of American National CowBelles/Cattle Women 1970-1993, and served as chairperson and on numerous committees. She was active in and secretary of the American Red Brangus Association. She was a member of the DeRidder Gardenettes for about 20 years, and served as treasurer and a flower show judge. Survivors include her husband, Harold H. He was a past commander of the American Legion W.B. Williams Post 1. He was a past Worshipful Master of the John C. LCAP 5/23/1998 Vinton--Funeral services for Sherry Jean Young, 38, will be at 2 p.m. today, May 23, in Hixson Funeral Home. The Revs. Rob Tibbits and Lance Simon will officiate. Burial will be in Merryville Cemetery. Visitation is from 8:30 a.m. A native of Merryville and a resident of Vinton most of her life, she was a resident of Orange, Texas. She was an elementary school teacher employed by West Orange Cove Independent School District. She was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Vinton. Survivors include one brother, Hart Young Jr. of Snellville Ga.; her father, Douglas Barton Young Sr. of Orange; and her mother, Betty Harper Young of Vinton.
