Visited his brother in Miss. in spring 1835 and scouted out the territory for friends and family in Edgefield Dist. Traveled to La. with a group, went as far west as present location of Shreveport. Decided that the area between Red River and the Ouachita River met all of the requirements. 3 Oct 1835 he married Eliza DRAKE, d/o Micajah DRAKE and Martha LANDRUM. Eliza's brother, Reuben DRAKE purchased part of the land in La. Left Edgefield District in 1836 for Mobile, then to New Orleans by steamboat. Traveled up the Mississippi River and Red River to Natchitoches, where they arrived on Christmas Eve 1836. Early in 1837 they traveled to site of future Mt. Lebanon. Children: Ann Haseltine Canfield, only child of Eliza and Martin born 2 Mar 1837. Eliza died the same day. Buried Mt. Lebanon Cem. Martin Canfield married 2nd 15 Dec 1846, Mary Ann GIBBS, born 16 Nov 1814 SC, died 10 Oct 1864 in Tx. , d/o Hiram Gibbs. Children; only child was Mary Emma Canfield born 2 Dec 1848. KOLB and Amanda Melvina BRINSON, on 25 Nov 1875. She died in 1881 near Fulton Ark. Daughter of A.T. and Margaret was Elizabeth Artemisia who married as his 2nd wife, John Franklin McDANIEL. She died in Columbus Ga. 24 Aug 1904. Youngest son was Norman Lafayette born 1855, died 3 Feb 1897. He was called "Pony" Cawthon. Ashley Thomas married 2nd ?? James Alexander Cawthon, born 6 Mar 1878, died 6 July 1961 Minden La. On 18 Jan 1905 he married Maggie Mae DANCE at Athens La. HUCKABY. D/o Milton CHILES and Martha Ann MARTIN from Charleston SC. Left SC with parents, siblings, over 50 slaves, traveled by ox cart to Bienville Parish where Milton's brother-in-law John Houston operated a store at old Sparta. In Miss. John, oldest child of Milton, and 15 of the slaves died of yellow fever. They stopped in Bastrop, where two more of the children died. Only 4 of their 9 children lived to old age, Reuben, George, Mary, Carrie. About 3 years before Civil War they moved to the Sparta area. They made several moves in this area during their lives, but only to different pieces of land. CLAMPITT, Rev. George Circuit riding Cumberland Presbyterian minister, came to Bienville Parish 1857. Born ca 1813 SC, wife Mary born ca 1822 Ala. Lived Ark. before coming to La. Several children including W.J. who married J.C. CLARK, William S/o Savilla DILLARD and former slave Tobe CLARK, sold from plantation in Va. Tobe somehow made his way to Bienville Parish and had a family. Article describes growing up in Bienville Parish) COCKERHAM, John Born 2 May 1797 in S.C., married Rebecca MASSEY, born 13 Nov 1805 Ireland. Settled in Miss. Emigrated to Catahoula Parish La. where he served as Representative for several years. Moved to Old Castor, Bienville Parish. 1860 he owned 36 slaves, much land, belonged to Methodist Episcopal Church, donated land for Old Castor Church and Cemetery where he is buried. He died 19 June 1880, Rebecca died Feb 1866. 10 Children: M.A. married Maggie E. COLBERT, James Polk and Frances LEARY Colbert James Polk Colbert born 20 Nov 1844, Montgomery Co. Ala., died 17 April 1919 Gibsland La., S/o William Williams Colbert and Mary Ann Elizabeth GOODSON. His parents moved to Bienville Parish in 1849, arriving May 20. Lived Oak Lawn Plantation west of Mt. Lebanon. Served CSA, orderly to Col. Purgond , didn't leave La. Uncle Bob, a trusted slave served him wherever he went, cooking and washing for him. After the war he purchased a plantation from his father (P.O. Mt. Lebanon) and 17 Feb 1870 married Frances Jane LEARY, d/o Calvin LEARY and Hephzibah LOFTIN. She was born 13 Oct 1849, Houston Co. Ga., moved to La. when a couple of months old, raised on father's plantation, Sunnyside, near Minden, died 21 Nov 1930. 1876 James and Frances moved to Mt. Lebanon where they lived 22 years, moving then to Ruston La. Ala., s/o William Williams Colbert and Mary Ann Elizabeth GOODSON who were born in Greene Co. Ga. and Darlington District S.C. respectively. When he was nine his parents moved to Bienville Parish La. near Mt. Lebanon. William B. served CSA along with brothers Richard and John Randolph Colbert. Joined Camp Moore La. 7 July 1861, Co C 9th La. Inf. William B. was shortly chosen Lieutenant. Released from capture at Ft. Delaware, transported to Shreveport La. His brother, Fleming T. Colbert was Constable of Montgomery in 1823. His father was a Mason, owned 1,005 acres and had 26 slaves. As an adult William W. established a plantation and married 17 Feb 1831, Mary Ann Elizabeth GOODSON, d/o John GOODSON and Mary Elizabeth ADAMS who were from Darlington Dist. S,C. John Goodson served in War of 1812, married daughter of Burgess ADAMS of Darlington. William W. and Mary Ann moved to Bienville Parish , arriving at home of his brother, Andrew Jackson Colbert who moved there from Noxubee Co. Miss. in 1848. William eventually owned 2,400 acres in La. beginning in 1849. Did not serve CSA because of age but furnished food and supplies. 4 sons served in the war; Richard, William B., John R. and James Polk. Richard died at Winchester in 1864. William W. died 14 August 1890 and is buried in family cemetery just north of his home. His obituary, written by his friend, Dr. J.C. Egan, said in part that he was descended from Rev. patriots, his maternal great grandfather being Col. Lee who belonged to Gen. Marion's army. Miss. to the Woodville Community. Jeptha had received a patent of land in Bienville Parish for his service in the Mexican War with the Miss. Rifles under Col. Jefferson Davis, Capt. Downing's Co. He was in the neighborhood of the recently widowed sister of his step-mother Diana Garner REDWINE, widow of Pierce REDWINE. When Jeptha was orphaned, his uncle Martin CONGER and his wife Susan GARNER raised him, moving from Warren to Hinds Co. Miss. Martin Conger died young also but left instructions in his will that Susan raise Jeptha to his majority and give him a saddle, some money and put him on his own. She did this. Susan remarried later to a Mr. Gregg. About 1870 Jeptha sold out in Bienville Parish and moved his family to near Peytonville Ark., near Ashdown. Four of their older children stayed in La. Moved to Bienville Parish after Civil War, to Pleasant Grove Community, southeast of Ringgold. Ten of their children came to La. with them, their oldest son, John H., had died by that time. He was born ca 1840, never returned from Civil War , the last record showing him released from Richmond Hospital 2 Feb 1863. Amanda (ca 1842 - ca 1873) married William W. SHEFFIELD 16 Nov 1865, Meriwether Co. Ga. They made the move to La. and joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in April 1867, but after Amanda died he went back to Ga. leaving his three small children with their grandparents and Uncle "Doc". The children were John Henry Sheffield, Frances Elizabeth Sheffield and William Joseph Sheffield. William T. Corley Jr. (1844 - 1919) married Betty COOK and had six children: Laura, William Lynn, Thomas A., Annie Ethel "Dolly", Alexander "Ellis", and Jessie. He said his father, Byrd Crawford was of Alabama Creek origin and left one day, leaving young Byrd and his mother, Barbara Ann WALKER, at home in order to go to town. They never heard from him again. They never knew if foul play was involved or he left voluntarily. His mother was d/o Emily and Thomas WALKER of Pike Co. Barbara later married George Washington HOOD, also of Indian ancestry. They had 12 children: James, Zuella, Evie, Matty Lucky, Lucille, Pearl, Mary, John, Octo, Ira, Levander, and Ezra. While Byrd was still a student at Tuskegee his family moved across La. into Tx. and then settled in Muskogee Okla. which was Indian Territory. They are buried there. Holland Willa ADAMS parents were Lewis ADAMS and Sarah GREEN of Tuskegee Ala. Lewis Adams' father was Jesse ADAMS of Irish descent. Lewis Adams, with the help of Tom Campbell, a local politician, got a bill passed to start an industrial school for the black men. This led to the hiring of Booker T. Washington, age 25, a Hampton Institute graduate. Lewis taught trades there until his death. This was the beginnings of the famous Tuskegee Institute. Willa's brothers and sisters were Mary Motley, Virginia Driver, William Thomas Adams, Letitia Clark, Lillie Alice Lovett, Martha Norma Adams, Theresa Bell Jones, Bessie Avery Stevens, Medora Marsden, Jesse Adams, Haygood Aticus Adams, Fred Adams. Both Byrd and Holland attended Tuskegee Institute and were students of George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington. Byrd met Lewis Adams and fell in love with his daughter, Holland. Charles P. Adams, founder of Grambling College had married Holland's sister Martha Norma. He sent for Byrd to teach at Grambling. A son, Theron , was born. They later moved to Lafayette Co. Ark to organize a school there. Four girls were born there, Theresa, Pearl, Genie and Byrdie (twins). They moved back to Grambling in 1914 , then to Arcadia La. John WYNNE, member of Parliament from Canterbury (29th of Edward III (1356) is the first one mentioned in the records. The name is found frequently in records on down to Robert Wynne, Mayor of Canterbury (1599). This Robert Wynne was buried at St. Georges on 6 Sept 1609. His wife buried on 8 Sept 1609. His son, Peter Wynne of Canterbury, Gentleman, married Martha COPPIN of St. Margarets, Canterbury on 12 Aug 1620 at St. Martins. William COPPIN, father of Martha signed the marriage bond. He was a grandson of John COPPIN, a member of Parliament. William was buried at St. Georges 18 Mar 1633. Robert Wynne, s/o Peter Wynne and Martha COPPIN was christened at St. Dunstans, Canterbury, 28 Dec 1622. He came to Va. ca 1650 or before as his name is mentioned along with Capt. Abraham WOOD. He married Mary POYTHRESS of Charles City Va. He was a Justice of the County Court, Captain and Colonel of Militia and represented Charles City County in the House of Burgesses 1657-60, and was speaker of the House of Burgesses during the Long Parliament of 1661-1774. Col. Wynne was speaker longer than any other man in Va. History. His will was made 1 July 1675, probated in England 15 Aug 1678. His youngest son, Joshua received a house, an oatmeal mill, two tenant houses in Canterbury and the plantation called Georges, with all the tobacco houses, in Va. Joshua Wynne was a Justice in Charles City County, member of the House of Burgesses and after Prince George Co. was cut off from Charles City Co., was sheriff of Prince George Co. 1705-1711. He was a Major of Militia, one of commission of six who fixed the line between Va. and N.Car. Lived near Monk's Neck Creek which later became Dinwiddie Co. He died before or about 30 Mar 1715, killed by Saponey Indians in retaliation for the death of one of their great men. Joshua's wife was Mary JONES d/o Major Peter JONES and his wife Margaret WOOD. Margaret was d/o Maj. Gen. Abraham WOOD. He was a member of the Governor's Council, commanded a regiment at Ft. Henry. He was eventually deeded the fort and the land. William Wynne, s/o Joshua and Mary, was born ca 1705, was one of the first justices of Brunswick Co. Va. He later moved to Pittsylvania Co. Va. where he received an 18,000 acre patent of land. His wife was Frances ?. Their daughter, Martha, married Col. Henry Dixon. Thomas Wynne, s/o William and Frances, born 1724-26, served as vestryman of Antrim Parish for many years. In 1785 he moved from Va. to Ga. He had a son, Thomas. Thomas II married and moved to Tenn. He had a son, Thomas.
