James Stewart was born in GA in 1795 (his son always stated in census records that James was born in South Carolina). In the 1870 LA census, slash marks indicate that both his parents were foreign born. In the 1880 LA census, James states that his father was born in NC and his mother in SC. James and his son’s last name changes spelling throughout the census records: Stuart, Stewart, Steward, Stuard, and Steuart. Thank goodness for soundex. James Stewart and wife Sarah Tucker had the following children: Mary, Lucinda, Sarah, James L., and Candis. The family migrated from GA to FL to AL to LA, possibly stopping also in MS. Interesting note: a James L. Stewart participated in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. Could he be related to this family? James Stuart is first found in Pulaski Co., GA, in 1820, next door to John Stuart who is the right age to be his father. John and his wife have 7 children living at home – 4 boys and 3 girls. About 5 doors down are the Shadrack Sutton and John Powell families, who traveled with the Stewarts to Barbour County, AL, and Bienville Parish, LA. James married Sarah “Sally” Tucker, daughter of Reuben Tucker and Candis Andrews who are in Clarke Co., GA, in 1820 (established in 1801). Reuben was listed as one of those eligible to participate in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. Reuben died in Sumter County in 1841. In 1828, James purchases land in Jackson Co., FL. Also in Jackson Co. are John Stewart, Charles H. Stewart, and Shadderick Sutton. In the 1833 AL State (not federal) Census, Barbour Co., AL, we find the James Steward family. Also in this census are these families: John Steward, J.S. Steward, D.S. Steward, and Alexandria Steward. James purchases land in Barbour County from the government in 1840. On the same day, John Stewart purchases land in the same county. In 1850, James’ son James L. Stewart purchases land from the government in Barbour County. On the same day and in the same county, John Stewart and Alexandria Stewart purchase land. James L. Stewart married Lovie Wise in Barbour County. Children: Elastus, Selestine, Ada, James, and Willie. James L.’s sister Lucinda married Shadrack Powell Sutton in Barbour County. Lovie’s parents are Ezekial Wise and Winnefred Bullock (daughter of Burwell Bullock). Ezekial is descended from Col. John Wise of Clifton Plantation in Accomack Co., VA (book: Col. John Wise of England and Virginia by Jennings Cropper Wise). In 1852, John Stewart dies in Barbour Co., AL. His will lists these heirs: wife Anna L., lawful heirs Alexander, John L., Norman, Daniel L., and Margaret McDonald Turner. No James Stewart is listed. In the book, “Rural Landowners of Barbour County, AL, 1851” by Marie H. Godfrey, I found this Stewart family: John G. Stewart, b. ca. 1770 Scotland, migrated to Newberry District, SC, then to Barbour County in the 1820’s, died by July 1852. Wife was Anna (Nancy) L., born ca. 1777 NC. In 1860, she was living with Daniel L. Stewart. John and Anna’s children who were listed in the Rural Landowners book were: 1. John L. Stewart, Jr., b. ca. 1800 NC. May have had a wife named Christian. 2. Norman, born 1804, d. May 26 1854, married Jane, b. 1824, died May 20 1893. 3. Daniel L., b. ca. 1814 NC, d. Oct. 20 1882, married Frances E. Smith James and James L. Stewart’s families migrate to Arcadia in Bienville Parish, LA, where their descendants still live. Shadrack and Lucinda Stewart Sutton also migrate to Bienville Parish where Shadrack served as Arcadia, LA’s first postmaster and actually gave the town its name. Need to know: Is the John Stewart of Pulaski Co., GA, the same as the John Stewart of Barbour Co., AL? How is John Stewart related to my James? Is the James L. Stewart in the 1805 GA Land Lottery one of our direct ancestors? Do the records of Clark County, GA (in Athens) have info about our Stewarts? Do the records of Pulaski Co., GA, have info about our Stewarts? Early Stewart Census Research Notes: • The Suttons, Powells, and Stewarts are proven to have traveled as a group and intermarried in GA, AL, and LA • James Stewart, b. 1795 GA, (father born in NC, mother born in SC) married Sarah Tucker in GA (daughter of Reuben Tucker) • Their daughter Lucinda Stewart married Shadrack Powell Sutton (grandson of Solomon Sutton of Pitt County, NC) in Barbour County, AL. Theory: if all these families traveled together, and Solomon was from Pitt County, NC, maybe James Stewarts’ father was from Pitt County, too.
