(NOTE: see “John Weiss” family history, shown below.) John B. White Died (NOTE: no other information was written about this person.) Below is a little family history that has been circulated for many years among the descendants of John Weiss/White. It was sent to me along with the family Bible information. It states that John Weiss was Holland Dutch. It was later proven that John was German. Apparently, when people asked John his nationality, he always said “Deutsch”, meaning “German”, but it sounded like he was saying “Dutch”. John Weiss (Holland Dutch) (White - English) Spelling of the WEISS, Veise, or Weissee or Viessee originally came from Holland. John Weiss had a Dutch Bible which he read often. He was not a specially religious man but a good citizen, not a church member, not a preacher. He owned a razor hone (a piece of leather - long and narrow) which he made and had carved on it the date 1795 with his initials. He came from the North Carolina mountains down to Alabama and lived near Coffeeville, Alabama (Clark County). He was 6 feet 2 inches (without shoes) and had a swarthy complexion, dark hair, and dark eyes. He was a big man but not fat. He was married twice. John Weiss and his first wife Rebecca Dorsett had three sons: Isaac, Henry, and Dorsett. There were other descendants of John Weiss, namely -- Andrew, William, Marion, Louis, Edmond, Thomas, Josephua, and one named John Frazier. It was not until John Weiss was 16 year old that he heard the English language spoken. John Weiss was buried on the banks of the Alabama River in Coffeeville, Alabama, Clark County. Since there is a very old cemetery in that section, it is believed that he is buried there. The courthouse in Alabama where the records of the Weiss families were kept was destroyed by fire. Some of the relatives have the Dutch Bible. Therefore, we know little about this family. These Weiss people seem to be mostly teachers, preachers, and some farmers.
