E. Courtney, Sr., "Uncle Gene," as we all called him, was taken from earth to his heavenly home February 22, 1920. Bro. Courtney was a fine old Southerner. Born at Gainsville, Ala., Sept. 18, 1836, his father, Eld. F. Courtney was a highly cultured and eminent preacher who for half a century gave North Louisiana a powerful ministry. The subject of this sketch was the possessor of many of the fine qualities of his father. His mind was alert, his convictions were deep and he was ready at all times to defend them. His was a hospitable home and he was by nature generous to a fault. He was an ardent lover of the South and in devotion gave himself in Civil War service, being a member of the 3rd Arkansas regiment, Texas brigade Hood's division, Longstreet's Corps Army of northern Va., and was severely wounded in the neck at the battle of Chicamauga. He was married in 1865 to Miss Elizabeth Hardy, who with five children still lives. Two children are dead. Bro. Courtney was not converted until the summer of 1910, when he united with the Mr. Lebanon Church and was baptized by F. L. Cox. The writer intimately knew Bro. Courtney from the year 1907 'til the time of his death, and found in him a true and persistent friend. THe church had no more faithful man than he during the years he lived after becoming a member, and his oft expressed regret was, that he missed the joys of Christian service during the most active part of his life. J. C. COX. Additional Comments: A previous article in The Bienville Democrat published February 26, 1920 (Page 6) described Gene Courtney's condition as being feeble for months, but only confined to a bed for a few days before his death. He and his wife, Elizabeth HARDY Courtney are buried at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Mt. Lebanon, Louisiana.
