Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Conger Funeral Home. Hay drowned Monday when a boat he was riding in struck a stump and turned over, throwing him and his son Darrell into the near freezing lake water. The accident occurred near the dam near Ringgold. The younger Hay was rescued by a neighbor, O.T. McCoy, after spending about two hours in the water hanging on to a floating duck blind. Other survivors of the elder Hay include his widow, Mrs. Angie Jolley Hay; two other sons, J.V. and Archie Hay, all of Ringgold; three sisters, Mrs. Nettie Day, Mrs. Zander Waites and Mrs. Elmer (Smith), all of Ringgold; and three brothers, Case and Dude Hay of Ringgold and Pat Hay of Castor.
