CRAWFORD, POLICE JUROR DIES CIVIC LEADER DIES [PICTURE] SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MAN DIES OF BRIEF ILLNESS IN COLORADO Captain William Thomas Crawford of 4320 Fairfield Ave., 67 years old, one of Louisiana's most prominent business citizens, died at Glenwood Springs, Colo. friday evening at 6 o'clock, following an illness of a few hours, according to telegram received by relatives in Shreveport. News of Captain Crawford's illness was first received Friday morning at 10 o'clock, when a telegram was received stating that he was very ill. A second wire was received stating that the illness was due to indigestion, and that the paitent was virtually restored. Friday night at 7 o'clock, news of Captain Crawford's death was received. BODY TO BE RECEIVED TUESDAY Funeral arrangements have no yet been completed, but it is expected that the body will arrive in Shreveport Tuesday morning. Captain Crawford left Shreveport July 28?, for Glenwood Springs, where Mrs. Crawford, his daughter, Mrs. James Meriwether, his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ed. J. Captain Crawford planned to return to Shreveport August 15. Ed J. Crawford, of 4810 Fairfield Avenue, son of Captain Crawford, and his son-in-law James E. Meriwether of 4330 Fairfield avenue, left Shreveport at 12:05 o'clock for Pueblo, Colo., where they will join the funeral party returning to Shreveport. Captain Crawford is survived by his wife, Mrs. Trala Jacobs Crawford, daughter of the late Edward Jacobs, organizer and first president at the First National bank; a son, Ed J. Crawford, and a daughter, Mrs. James Meriwether, four grandchildren, James M. Meriwether, Jr., Lola Meriwether, Ed J. Crawford, Jr, and Marian Crawford. He also had a brother in South Carolina. BORN IN BOSSIER PARISH Captain Crawford was born at Rocky Mount in Bossier parish, November 8, 1857. While quite young, his parents returned to their orignal home in Columbia. S. C. where he spent his boyhood. At the age of 27, he came to Shreveport and entered the employ of the Hicks Company, Ltd., as cotton classer and accountant. As a business man he was successful and promotion followed rapidly. Captain Crawford remained with the Hicks company for almost twelve years and then with John Jenkins and the late James Booth, the [they] organized the firm, Crawford, Jenkins and Booth, of which he was president. When Crawford, Jenkins and Booth added their motor department about five years ago, Captain Crawford was also placed at the head of that branch. At the time of his death he was the president of the First National Bank, president of the Crawford, Jenkins and Booth interests, president of the Louisiana State LIfe Insurance company, vice president of the Shreveport Railways company and treasurer of the Genevieve Orphanage on Olive street. For several years he was actively identified with the Shreveport baseball club in both the Southern and Texas league. His love for nature and out of doors sports and the esteem in which his comrades held him is evidenced by the office he held, as president of the Jeems Bayou fishing and hunting club. The title of "captain" was bestowed on him years ago when he was commander of the Shreveport home guard company. Captain Crawford was a member of the Caddo Lodge of the Masonic fraternity. Captain Crawford married, January ?? 1894, Miss Trala Jacobs, daughter of the late Edward Jacobs, organizer and first president of the First National bank.
