Elias Fort Connell Mr. Editor: It is with a sad heart that I write of the death of our departed brother. He was sick when I left home to attend the late session of our Conference at New Orleans, and I expected then that his end was near. When I returned I found him in a semi-conscious state, and he lingered but a few days. In some respects Bro. Connell was a remarkable man. His religion was not of the emotional kind, but he acted upon principle. He was constant and unyielding in his habits. He was a man of great force of character. He would have been recognized as a man of note anywhere. His native ability, large experience and liberality of soul, made him a useful man both to his neighborhood and church. The large number of all classes of society who attended his funeral attested to his character. His neighborhood will miss him, for in it he was the leading spirit of enterprise, the one most sought after for advice, and the benefactor of the poor and needy. His church will miss him, for he gave to it financial support and wise leadership in all temporalities. His family will miss him, for he provided for them liberally, gave them respectability in society, and was true to all of his obligations. His wife is broken-hearted. May God recompense her for her sorrow, and prove a father to the orphans. Our loss is great. May it be his eternal gain. He was born in Robinson County, Tenn., March 5, 1832, and died at his home in Fillmore, Bossier Parish, La., January 27, 1879. He had been a member of the church about twenty-five years. J. W. Medlock Died: At Fillmore in this parish, January 27, 1879, ELIAS FORT CONNELL. Deceased was born in Robinson County, Tennessee, March 5, 1832. He was one of the oldest citizens of Bossier Parish. Full of honors as a good and useful citizen, in the respect of his fellow man, he has gone to his final reward. Mr. Connell was one of the best and truest of men, and one of the warmest and best of friends and neighbors. His death is a great loss to the parish, as well as a grievous affliction to his family and friends. A good man is gone-a fast friend faded away. Peace to his memory. Died: At his residence in Fillmore, Bossier Parish, La., on Monday morning, 27th January, Mr. E. F. Connell, aged 46 years. Born in Mississippi, removed to Louisiana in his youth; his early and mature manhood were spent in this, the State of his adoption. A useful, public spirited, and in some respects, an almost indispensable citizen in his vicinity, a good neighbor, firm friend. We commend his spirit to Him who is Almighty, to save; drop a tear over the sod that covers his body, and offer a prayer to the God of the widow and orphan in behalf of wife and children left behind him. --
