All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** -- Mrs. Mary Alice Bixler Kirtley Dies at Home of Daughter~17 Sept.1927 Mrs. Mary Alice Bixler Kirtley,73, widow of Edwin Frank Kirtley, of Plain Dealing, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ben A. Mathews, 920 Fairview Ave., at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon after a long illness. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Ben Mathews, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. J.M. Emmons, of Bossier City. She was born in Baton Rouge, March 17, 1854. Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist Church of Plain Dealing at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. A.M. Wynn. The Roll Osborn & Sons Funeral Home will have charge. Pall-bearers wil be Leon Sanders, Dr. W.S. Bell, Douglas McKellar Sr., Elvin Helfner, F.R. Garrett, J.B. Walker, James Rogers Sr., and Bennie Turnley, all of Plain Dealing. ~Mrs. Alice Bixler Kirtley~ Mrs. Alice Bixler Kirtley, aged 73 years died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Ben Mathews in Shreveport on Saturday, September the 17th. , and was brought to Plain Dealing for interment Sunday afternoon. Amid a vast congregation of sorrowing friends and relatives the funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.M. Wynn, of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Ernest Scott of the Baptist Church, the services being held in the Methodist Church of which she had long been a member. Miss Lucille Wright had charge of the music at piano, the choir singing several effective hymns, followed by a beautiful solo by Mrs. Roberta Smith. -- (*Note from submitter: Mary Alice Bixler Kirtley was the daughter of Lydia Ann Brown Bixler & John B. Bixler. She was married to Edwin Frank Kirtley and had 3 daughters: Frankie Alice Kirtley Mathews, Hattie Kirtley Emmons & Mary Edwina Kirtley. Mary Alice was also Charter Member of the Methodist Church in Plain Dealing and as a young girl taught Sunday School there. Mary Alice was sister to my Great Grandfather, Thomas Benton Bixler.)
