All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** ************ Alexander (Aleck) Boarman 1839-1916 Alexander (Aleck) Boarman was a Representative from Louisiana. He was born in Yazoo City, Yazoo County, Miss. on December 10, 1839. Mr Boarman lost his parents in infancy and was raised by relatives in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, La. He attended the common schools of Shreveport, La., and Kentucky Military Institute at Frankfort and was graduated from the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1860. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as lieutenant of the Caddo Rifles and was subsequently promoted to the rank of captain and served throughout the war. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Shreveport, La. Mr. Boarman was mayor of Shreveport from May 7, 1866, to August 8, 1867, city attorney of Shreveport 1868-1872 and an unsuccessful candidate for election as secretary of state in 1872. He was elected as a Liberal Republican to the Forty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative-elect James McCleery and served from December 3, 1872, to March 3, 1873. He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1872 and resumed the practice of law in Shreveport, La. Mr. Boarman was judge of the tenth judicial district court, Caddo Parish, La., 1877-1880, appointed United States judge for the western district of Louisiana by President Garfield on May 18, 1881, and served until his death, while on a visit, at Loon Lake, Franklin County, N.Y., August 30, 1916. Mr. Alexander Boarman is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Shreveport, La.
