HEARN was born February 12, 1859, on a farm in Choctaw County, Alabama. His parents, David Russell and Martha Jane Mixon Hearn, removed to Madison County, Mississippi, while he was quite young. His father, in addition to his farm activities, owned and operated a public gin, grist mill, sawmill and shop where the public was served in having their cotton ginned, corn ground and farm implements repaired. The boy worked on the farm and in the shop and mill until 1877. When he began work as a laborer in the station of the Illinois Central Railroad at Madison Station, Mississippi. He learned telegraphy, his first position being telegraph operator at Manchac, Louisiana. By diligent study and application to business, he became very efficient in the performance of his duties and was promoted from time to time, in both traffic and operative departments. He came to Shreveport as agent of the V. S. & P. Railway in 1889. He was promoted to Commercial Agent in 1898 and was very successful in soliciting business for his road and in creating a most harmonious relationship between his company and the public. In 1905 he was made assistant general freight agent where he served with distinction until be was made superintendent in 1907. Here he won the respect of the officers and employees, and was regarded by the public as a model executive. Captain Hearn was elected president of the Shreveport Railways Company in 1918, where he still presides as an able, patient, untiring, servant of the public. He has won the confidence of his employees and the public whom he strives so faithfully to serve. Captain Hearn is also the vice-president of the City Savings Bank & Trust Company, Director of the Louisiana State Life Insurance Company; H. B. Hearn Vice-president of the Texas Ball League; Past Master of the Caddo Lodge No. 179 A. F. & A.
