Land, John R., district judge for Caddo parish, was born at Lexington, Miss., July 9, 1862, and is a son of Thomas T. and Mary Eliza (Dillingliam) Land. His father, a native of Tennessee, was reared in Mississippi and later settled in Caddo parish, La., where he was twice elected district judge, and twice elevated to the supreme bench of Louisiana. His mother was a native of Mississippi. The subject of this personal sketch is a brother of Judge Alfred D. Land, the present associate justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, and in whose personal sketch, appealing in this volume, a more extended mention of parental history is made. John R. Land was reared in Shreveport and educated in Washington and Lee university, Lexington, Va. He studied law in the office of his father and was admitted to the bar in 1884. In 1888 he was elected to represent Caddo parish in the legislature, and in the same year was a member of the state convention to nominate delegates to the national Democratic convention. In 1892 he was elected district attorney for Caddo parish with marked and exceptional ability in that office until 1904. March 25, 1913, he was elected district judge. Fraternally, he is a member of the I. O. O. F., the Knights of Pythias, the B. P. O. E., and other fraternal bodies. He is a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Shreveport. In 1896 he married Miss Willie Armstead. To Judge and Mrs. Land 2 children have been born, namely: John R., Jr., and Mary Elizabeth. Judge Land is regarded as an able lawyer and jurist and is held in highest esteem by all who know him.
