Col. (Ret.) Hugh C. Durham, III, 61, died in his wife's arms in his home at sunset on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000 after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6 in the chapel at Rose-Neath, 1815 Marshall Street. Retired from the military, LTC Durham was a decorated Army Aviator, serving three tours in Vietnam, as well as serving his country in a number of capacities including Deputy U. S. Defense Representative to Pakistan, U. S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan; Assistant Professor of Military Science at Northwestern State University; Director of Personnel and Community Activities and Executive Officer to the Deputy Post Commander at Fort Polk, La.; Aviation Staff Officer, Defense Mapping Agency at the Aerospace Center in St. Louis; and Chief of Plans and Programs Branch for the Aviation Test Board. He held Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Northwestern State University. Following his retirement from the military, he accepted the position of Assistant Director and Student Personnel Services Officer for the Alexandria Regional Technical Institute in Alexandria, La. In 1989, he returned to his alma mater to become Coordinator for Central Louisiana Programs at Northwestern State University in Alexandria. In 1991, he was named Registrar at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., retiring in 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh C. Durham, Jr. and Audine Lawrence Durham. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his children, Hugh IV, Sharon, Amy Augustine and Patrick Netherton; his sister and brother-in-law, Rosalind and Buck Trussell, niece Susan and nephews Jim, Scott and Joe Trussell; and his grandchildren, Reed and Mason Durham. Pallbearers are: Dr. Robert Hernandez, Johnny Reid, Bob Turley, Bobby Sutton, Sr., Bobby Sutton, Jr., Buster Netherton, Jim Adger, Dr. Pat Peavy, Jim Montgomery, Charles Grubb, Buddy Trammell, Buck Trussell and Ken Epperson.
