Laura Collins Hammond

SHREVEPORT, LA- Laura Collins Hammond died peacefully on September 21, 2007. A
graveside service will be held at Forest Park Cemetery on Monday September 24 at 11:00 a.m.
with Rev. Bryan McDowell of First Presbyterian Church officiating.

Laura was born in Raymond, Mississippi on October 15, 1906, where she lived with her parents
Ellen and Thomas Collins. She attended college at Mississippi State College for Women. Laura
married Roy C. Hammond in 1929 and moved to Shreveport where she has lived ever since. 

At the time of her death she was the oldest living member of First Presbyterian Church where she 
participated in many activities of the church and was a member of the Woman's Department Club, 
and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an active bridge player until age 95. In 1997, 
she moved to the Stiles Apartments at the Glen where she resided until she suffered a sudden illness. 

Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her husband Roy C. Hammond, her parents Ellen and 
Thomas Collins, three brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by her daughter Marilyn Hammond Gallagher and husband Andrew; four grandchildren, 
Paul Tudor Gallagher and wife Elizabeth of Baton Rouge, Laura Gallagher Amberson and husband 
Joe of Dallas, Texas, John Andrew Gallagher of Baton Rouge and Patrick Thomas Gallagher of 
Shreveport. Her great grandchildren are Claire Collins Amberson, Joseph Harris Amberson IV and 
Davis Brutton Gallagher.

The family expresses sincere appreciation to the staff of the Stiles Apartments at the Glen, and her 
loving caregivers Cassandra Griffin, Gwen Landers, Burnadine Frederich and Mandy Johnson for 
there excellent care and loving concern.
