S. Highway 71 about three miles north of Belcher. Mrs. Holmes, who was en route to Shreveport to attend a meeting of the School Board, of which she was a member 29 years, was dead on arrival at the north Caddo Hospital in Vivian. Caddo Deputy Coroner Dr. Albert Thompson said she died of crushing injuries. Caddo Deputy Elmo Connell said the accident occurred as a herd of about 25 cows was being moved across the highway by employes (sic) of the Lynn Plantation of Gilliam. He said flagmen had been placed on the highway about 150 yards on each side of the herd. Connell said Louis W. Holmes, 76, husband of Mrs. Holmes, said he saw a pickup truck on the side o the road with flashing blinker lights and a white man waving at him but he didn't realize he was trying to stop him. Connell said the highway was dry and the Holmes car left 91 feet of skid marks before it struck the cow and two calves. He said the cow, weighing about 900 to 1,000 pounds, crashed into the car on the side occupied by Mrs. Holmes. The cow and a calf were killed by the impact and the third injured so badly, it had to be killed, he said. Holmes, who was only shaken up in the accident, was checked over at the North Caddo Hospital and released. Mrs. Holmes had served as a member of the School Board representing District "B" since 1940. This district includes Gilliam, Belcher, Dixie, Rodessa, Hoston, Ida and Mira. She was a member of the Hosston Baptist Church, the Eastern Star, the Missionary Society and held a lifetime membership in the Parent Teachers Association. Funeral Arrangements will be announced by the Hanner Funeral Home of Vivian. Note: Parent's Obituaries (J. J. Roberson and Helen May Roberson) On File In Bossier Parish
