As the station grew in popularity, many people came to recognize Mr. Henderson's familiar early morning greeting, "How are the needles kicking, Stedman?", a reference to the growing power and reputation of the station. Mr. Gunning's lifetime spanned an interesting period in the history and development of the City of Shreveport and the State of Louisiana. When Huey Long was traveling the state in his bid for governor, Mr. Gunning was asked to accompany him and set up the necessary broadcasting equipment to carry his speeches on KWKH Radio. During this time, he had many unusual expeiences. He retired from KWKH in 1978, after having been employed there for fifty-two years. During that time, he was seldom absent and was always willing to do whatever was asked of him. He was awarded a plaque with the inscription, "Consistency, thou art a jewel". His family was prominent in early Shreveport affairs. His great grandfather, Captain William Holmes, labored to help clear the log jam known as the "Red River Raft", so that the Red River would again be open for navigation. The Holmesville Subdivision in Shreveport is named for his family. Mr. Gunning's grandfather, Thomas Clay Johnson, owned a brickyard which manufactured bricks for many of the early downtown buildings. Among Mr. Gunning's treasured possessions was a brick from one of these buildings that was demolished to make way for a more modern structure. Mr. Gunning was a devoted husband and family man. As a young man, he was interested in community affairs, holding memberships in the Belcher United Methodist Church, the Lions' Club of Belcher, and was Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 94. For several years, he was Commissioner in Charge for the voting precinct at Belcher. He was interested in other people, and never failed to help when called upon. The family wishes to thank Dr. S. Germaine Cassierre for his competent, and compassionate care during Mr. Gunning's illness. We are also grateful to his faithful caregivers; and companions, Betty Wyatt, Ann McDonald, Betty Johnson, Julie McCann, and Jo Williams.
