June 30, 1894 The Progress. Shreveport, Louisiana June 30, 1894 Page 8; Column 3 Died. MARTIN - In this city Tuesday, June 26, at 7 p.m., Colonel David B. Martin, aged 63 years and 6 months. A large concourse of friends and acquaintace [sic] attended the funeral at 5:30 o'clock Wednesday evening, and he was, with tender and loving hands laid quietly to rest in the city cemetery. The death of Col. Martin came to many very unexpectedly, though he has been for years an invalid. It did not occur to us that he would so soon pass away. Another old landmark, as it were, has been removed from our midst. Col. Martin was born at Gallatin, Tenn., in 1830, and removed to Texas while quite a young man, and married Miss Susan Wiggins in 1857. He moved to this city shortly after the war, where he has resided ever since. He was, for many years, an active merchant, and has been engaged in the cotton business and very prominent in business circles. In latter years his failing health has caused him to retire almost from active life. He raised quite a family, some of which have preceded him to the grave. He was an earnest and devoted member of the Presbyterian church, a man of decided views and ever found battling for that which deemed right. He leaves a devoted wife and two daughters to mourn his loss, and a host of friends who will miss his familiar face, as they see him no more. He was a member of the board of health, and occupied a government position in the revenue department. To his afflicted family we extend our sympathy. May they take comfort in the thought that they will meet again and be reunited to part no more. Like a shock of ripe grain he has been gathered in.
