All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Mary Joan Koen NEW ORLEANS - Sister Mary Joan Koen, MSC on Friday, September 1, 2000 at 5:00 AM at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans, LA born Mary Ellen Koen on September 11, 1911 in Houston, TX. Sister was the daughter of the late Ettie Holt Koen and James Edgar Koen. A convert to Catholicism in 1923, Sister Joan entered the congregation of the Daughters of the Cross on September 8, 1931 in Shreveport, LA. She pronounced first vows on August 23, 1934 and made perpetual profession on August 23, 1937. Most of Sister's religious life was spent in education, many of those years at St. Vincent's Academy in Shreveport, LA. For some thirty years, Sister taught in elementary school and worked occasionally as part time piano teacher. A talented artist, Sister earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Louisiana State University in 1959 and was a member of the Shreveport Art Club until 1997. For eighteen years she was head of the Art Department at St. Vincent's and from 1992 until 1997 was a volunteer instructor at Centenary College where she taught art and calligraphy to senior citizens. Sister served her religious community as Vocation Director and was on the Vocations Committee for ten years and on the Community Life Committee for five years. In 1997 Sister Joan transferred to the Marianites of Holy Cross and lived at Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent until her recent transfer to Our Lady of Wisdom where she died. Visitation will begin with a Prayer Service on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at 10:00 AM at OUR LADY OF HOLY CROSS CONVENT CHAPEL, 4123 WOODLAND DRIVE, NEW ORLEANS, LA and continue until the celebration of the Funeral Mass at 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Holy Cross Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marianites of Holy Cross Retirement Fund, 1011 Gallier Street, New Orleans, LA 70117-6111, preferred.
