All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Prominent Local Physician Dies Dr. Wyeth Bodine Worley, 70, prominent Shreveport physician and a past president of the Caddo Parish School Board and Shreveport Medical Society, died of a sudden illness about 11:15 p. m. Wednesday at his home at 432 Pennsylvania Ave. Born March 30, 1904 in Gilliam, Dr. Worley had lived in Shreveport for more than 50 years and had been a practicing pediatrician here since 1928. He obtained his B. S. degree from Centenary College and then his medical degree from Baylor University of School of Medicine in 1926. He interned at the old Charity Hospital here and served a two-year residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisc. He was a member of the Caddo Parish School Board for 24 years and served two terms as its president. At the time of his death, he was director of health services for the Caddo Parish School Board's Title I Program. Dr. Worley, in 1971 received the Mr. Shreveport award from the Optimist Club of Shreveport for his outstanding work with youth. He served as basketball chairman for many years and was team physician for Fair Park High School's football team from 1932 to 1960. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, where he served on the board of Deacons. He was a member of the local, state and American medical associations, a member of the Shreveport Country Club and a former member of the Lions Club. In 1950, he served on the White House Conference on Children and Youth. He also was a member of the Selective Service Appeals Board, western district, for over 20 years. Dr. Worley, in addition to service on all local hospital staffs, also served on the staff of St. Ann's Home for Unwed Mothers from the time of its founding. He was married to the former Dessie Mae Bostick of Pleasant Hill. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. W. H. Worley of Shreveport and Penuel Hayes Worley of Little Rock and Mrs. Richard Wolf of Shreveport; his mother, Mrs. Penuel C. Worley of Shreveport; three brothers, Dr. Ross Hoss Worley, and Louis Dale Worley, all of Shreveport; and eight grandchildren. The family request that any memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church or the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home. Services for Dr. Worley will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Shreveport with the Rev. Richard Dupree to officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park under the direction of Boone Funeral Home of Bossier City. Pallbearers will be Dr. S. L. Gill, Dr. R. H. Riggs, Dr. j. W. Cotter, Dr. William Haynie, Judge Ruvain Hendricks, Weyland Alfred, Larry Shirley and Burt Harper. Honory pallbearers will be Geroge Sproull, N. B. Carstarphen, Dr. O. C. Thomas, deacons of the First Baptist Church, members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class of First Baptist and members of the Shreveport Medical Society.
