Contributed by Margaret Moore Joseph A. Anderson, planter, Was born in Atlantic county, New Jersey, September 3,1845. He is the son of William and Aehas (Allen) Anderson, natives of Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. They were married in New Jersey, and became the parents of four children, three sons and one daughter, viz: Joseph A., the subject of this sketch; Elizabeth L., wife of Walter Balfour, of Pocahontas county, Iowa; Achas A., wife of Samuel Bowell, of Pocahontas county, Iowa; Moranda. William Anderson, with his family, removed to Rock Island, Illinois, in 1857. He was by occupation a glass blower. After removing to Illinois he engaged in farming. The subject of this sketch received a good business education in the schools of New Jersey and Illinois. He has been a farmer since beginning business life for himself. In 1863 Mr. Anderson enlisted in the United States army, Company A, Ninth Iowa Cavalry, in which company he served until the close of the war. After the war he returned to Illinois, and was there engaged in farming, until 1888, when he removed with his family to Calcasieu parish Louisiana, arid purchased a farm of three hundred and twenty acres of land. I He has given his principal attention to rice culture, in which he has been successful. Mr. Anderson was married, in 1868, to Miss Carrie I,. Robbins, daughter of Isaac and Louvincia (Prentiss) Robbins. Her father was a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Ohio. Mr. Anderson is a member of the Masonic order.
