ESCLAVON(1) FAMILY in Calcasieu Parish, La Submitted by Virginia DeMarce ** ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ NOTES ON THE ESCLAVON(1) FAMILY: There were two married woman named Ellen Esclavon in Calcasieu Parish in the later 19th century. One was Ellen, mentioned by Swanton as a surviving speaker of the Attakapas language. She was married to Robert Esclavon and was apparently a daughter of Gatschet's 1885 informant, Louison Huntington, by Louison's first marriage. The other was Ellen, nee Bilbo according to a descendant,(1) married to Robert Esclavon's older brother, Adolphe Esclavon. The records for this family as abstracted in Hebert's Southwest Louisiana Records show not only the usual wide variants in spelling of the family names, but unusually wide variants in the names themselves. The propensity of French-speaking women to maintain their maiden names throughout their married lives was of considerable assistance in sorting out these lines: both Sarah Nelson, wife of Francois Esclavon, and Adelaide Letant, wife of Jacques Esclavon, appeared in later records under their maiden names, in the same households with their children, and long after the recorded dates of their marriages. NOTE: De Ville indicated that the paper did not bear this title and the date of 1792 was only probable. Among those listed was Andres Esclavont. De Ville commented, ". . . while others often bore contrived names. The only examples of the latter we recognize in the present list are 'Esclavont' (implying 'slave,' a surprising cognoment for a freedman) and . . . ." NOTE: this comment indicated unfamiliarity that "Esclavon" was in fact a name inherited from his French father. Sanders, Mary Elizabeth, comp., Records of Attakapas District, Louisiana, 1739-1811. JACQUES ESCLAVON AND HIS WIFE ADELAIDE LETANT DIT DELAFOSSE: The following is apparently the first appearance of the name Esclavon in the published records of St. Martin Parish. It indicates that the man getting married was born about 1785 in New Orleans, so that should be the location for seeking earlier records. ESCLAVON, Jean of NO and 30 years old, metif. This "Jean Esclavon" apparently usually used the name Jacques Esclavon, because almost all subsequent records are for Jacques and Adelaide: 1820 census index, LA: Esclavein, Iasque HAYES, Rodolph (natural son of Jacob & Sara ACHOUETTE [probably ASHWORTH} - free mulatoes) b. 16 may 1821, bt. 15 Oct. 1821 Spons: Jacques ESCLAVON & Francoise GALLIEN. Background of Jacques Esclavon's wife: Generally speaking, after the period of settlement in Calcasieu for Esclavon and related families, consult: James R. Broussard and James Michael Gaddy, The Church at Lake Charles, Louisiana 1850's - 1910, ed. By Rev. Donald J. Hebert and available in paperback from Hebert Publications. It indicates that a lot of the early baptisms for this region were done by missionaries from Texas and are recorded at St. Mary's in Galveston, TX, with the Catholic church in Lake Charles having a transcription of the entries. Hebert's series of Southwest Louisiana Records have a fair amount of information available on LETANG and its variant spellings (LETON, L'ETANG). Vol. 1, without a specific reference, stated that Pierre LETANT (Pierre & Charlotte SAINT MAURICE) m. Rosalie LA FOSSE (Opel. Ch.). The cross- reference was as follows: DE LA FOSSE, Rosa (Louis Roman & Rose BENOIT) m. 3 July 1793 Pierre L'ELANGE (Opel. Ch.: v. 1, p. 45). The revised 1-A indicates: L'ETANGE, Pierre - of Lienna, Canada (Pierre & Charlotte ST. MAURICE) m. 3 July 1793 Rose DE LA FOSSE - of Manchak in this colony (Louis Roman DELA FOSSE & Rose BENOIT) Wits: Francois GIOURI [GUILLORY], Joseph MODENA, Romain DE LA FOSSE. Fr. Pedro de ZAMORA (Opel. Ch.: v. 1-A, p. 45) (Hebert 1-A, 453). Hebert, v. 1, showed a son born to the couple: LETANT, Pierre (Pierre & Rosalie LAFOSSE) b. 19 April 1794 (Opel. Ch.: v. 1, p. 167) (Hebert 1, 379). The revision shows: L'ETANGE, Pierre (Pierre & Rosalie LAFOSSE) b. 19 April 1794, bt. Sunday, 29 Oct. 1796 Pats: Pierre L'ETANGE & Charlotte SAINT MAURICE; Mats: Romain DELAFOSSE & Rosalie BENOIT; Spons: Romain DE LAFOSSE - his paternal uncle & Rosalie BENOIT - his maternal grandmother. Fr. Pedro de ZAMORA (Opel. Ch.: v. 1-A, p. 167) (Hebert 2-A, 453). A major complication in this record is introduced by the apparent fact that by c. 1798, the same Rosalie LAFOSSE or DELAFOSSE who married Pierre LETANT was apparently having children by Francois GALLIEN. Divorce was not possible in Catholic Louisiana, but Hebert's abstracts do not indicate an irregular marital situation. What happened? Given French naming patterns, it is, of course, possible that Romain Delafosse and Rosalie Benoit had two different daughters named Rosalie, but this would have to be confirmed, particularly since Hebert does not abstract any marriage for the Gallien/Delafosse couple, either church or civil. Similarly, the Pierre LETANT who later showed up in the records as married to/having children by Louise Constance LAMIRAND by 1802 was apparently a remarriage/new relationship for the widower/ex-husband/separated husband? of Rosalie DELAFOSSE (Hebert, 1:379). Again, Hebert does not abstract a marriage for this couple, either church or civil. There is even more information in Hebert on the DE LA FOSSE/LA FOSSE family, which had marriage ties all over the far colonial French frontier, from Campeche (Galveston, TX) to Illinois. Rosalie Delafosse, wife of Pierre Letang, had numerous siblings. NOTE BY VED: Unfortunately, none of the data located thus far clarified the origins of the Adelaide LETANT/LETANT dit DE LA FOSSE, free mulatress, who in 1816 married Jean/Jacques Esclavon. According to the 1850 and 1860 census, she would have been born circa 1794/1800. Descendants should, however, probably concentrate on the household of Pierre LETANT and Rosalie DELAFOSSE. The two hypotheses that should be tested first are (1) that she was an out-of- wedlock child born to Rosalie Delafosse, daughter of Romain Delafosse and Rosalie Benoit, before her marriage to Pierre Letang (or, given the apparent separation of the couple, during it!!); or (2) that she was the mixed-race child of a slave woman in the Delafosse household who also happened to be named Rosalie. Francois Esclavon dit Venus and his wife Sarah Nelson: The following man would appear to be a brother of the Jacques Esclavon above. There is no direct data, but the close association of the two families, plus the duplicate appearance of his family on the 1860 census of Calcasieu Parish with the surname "Venus" instead of "Esclavon," are highly indicative of this filiation. I have not yet identified the parentage of Sarah Nelson, but there was a Nelson family who left several records at the courthouse in Opelousas, LA: William Nelson who married Therese Darden of the Chitimacha Tribe; Celeste Nelson who m. Alexandre Carsayno/Kersalie/Quersayno, etc. ESCLAVON, Francois m. 21 March 1838, Sara NELSON (Opel. Ct.
