He was the son of Archibald and Patience White Kennedy. He married Inez Isidore Higgins of NY in 1872 in Gillman, Illinois then moved to Topeka, Kansas where his three children were born. He formed the company Kennedy & Stone Engineering Co. He and the family moved to Lake Charles in 1888 as he was hired to build the Kansas City, Watkins, and Gulf Railway from Lake Charles to Alexandria. This later became the Missouri Pacific Railway. He died July 25, 1892 on the day the railroad was dedicated. According to his obituary, "He was compelled to be on the line of the road and in camp much of the time, and it is perhaps in this way, through some exposure, he was stricken with disease, which finally after several weeks of sickness, resulted in his death". Lucien had run away from home to be in the Civil War and served as a bugler or flag bearer as he was underage. Later, he was a private in the 14th Battery Indiana Light Artillery. He was prisoner of war in Andersonville Prison from June 11, 1864 to December 10, 1864. He was then exchanged and was sent to a hospital near Annapolis, MD from December 16, 1864 to January, 1965. He limped the rest of his life and supposedly died from those wounds. The disease was thought to be "osteomyalgia". According to his obituary, he was a pleasant and excellant gentleman and made many friends among many classes. He and the family lived on the corner of Pine and Ryan streets in Lake Charles. He was the parent of Marian Frances, Lucien William, Jr., and Inez Kennedy.
