Ryan is a native of Maine; born in Augusta, 1814 Ile is of Irish and English blood, his father having been a native of Ireland, his mother of England. He was reared and educated in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia, Mr. Ryan learned the trade of machinist and engineer, and for many years he followed this vocation. He served in the Confederate States army from 1861 until the close of the war. At the beginning of the war he raised two companies, an infantry and a cavalry. He was made captain of the former, and his company served gallantly during the whole of the struggle. Capt. Ryan is also a veteran of the Mexican war, through the whole of which he served with Jefferson Davis.
