Thus has passed away one of the oldest and best citizens of this parish. The deceased was born in Louisiana, and has resided in Calcasieu for the last thirty years. In the nobler qualities of human nature he had no superior. Honest, conscientious, hospitable and generous---a consisten member of the Baptist Church for the last ren or twelve years, he was respected and beloved by the entire community. The disease of which he died was of several years standing, but one which he endured with christian fortitude, and which left his mental faculties unimpaired up to the latest moment of life. He died in the calm assurance of a blissful immortality, ready and willing to depart, and surrounded by a large number of his near relations and friends. His funeral sermon will be preached at the Baptist Church at Big Woods to-morrow, by the Rev. Mr. Fancher. "And I am glad that he has lived thus long, And glad that he has gone to his reward, Nor deem that kindly Nature did him wrong, Softly to disengage the vital cord; When his weak hand grew palsied, and his eye Dim with the mists of age, it was his time to die." * * * (This Abel was the s/o Michael Lyons and Mary Hayes) * * * IMPERIAL CALCASIEU RECORDS, Vol l ANTIOCH PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH, by Vivian Hebert Swent pg. 79 #138 Abel Lyons / d. Cundy _______________________________________________________ LYONS, Zilpha A. Coward Echo 4/24/1880 Obituary for Zilpha A. Coward Lyons, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Jan Craven Source: Echo: April 24, 1880. Died: Lyons - At the residence of her son, Sam Lyons at Big Woods, Calcaseiu parish, LA, on Thrusday, April 22, 1880 at 7 o'clock p.m. Zilpha A. Coward, wife of David H. Lyons, aged 46 years. The sympathies of the entire community will be strongly aroused by the above notice. Just a month and a day before her death the deceased and her husband (sheriff of Calcaseiu parish) were bereaved, at Lake Charles, of their son Erastus J. Lyons, aged 17 years. Perhaps to assuage their grief, the parents went to the country, and there on the 11th inst., death claimed their son Ofutt Lyons, aged 12 years. Leaving this fresh scene of sorrow, they went tot the residence of their eldest son, Sam Lyons at Big Woods and thither the death angel followed, and two days ago called the wife and mother away from all earthly trouble. The deceased was a descendant of one of the oldest and most respected settlers of our parish, and possessed, in addition to a kind, benevolent and affectionate disposition, most extraordinary qualities of firmness and heroism, qualities which she frequently displayed in trying situations connected with her husband's official position as sheriff. She was indeed "a tower of strength unto her husband" and the sympathy previously awakened for him, by the death of his two boys, is now in tensified (sic) by the death of the beloved partner. NOTE: Zilpha Ann Coward was the daughter of Richard Adderson Coward (s/o Hardy Coward and Elizabeth Bates) and Harriett Buckner Smith. Source: Will of Richard Adderson Coward.
