Not much better. 3. Another frost. At the school house composing a letter to my brother James. 4. Wet, damp day. Alfred and Erastus came to school. Shelled 2 barrels corn to take to mill. 5. Cloudy and warm. 6. James and Landry came to school 7. Fine day. At school. 8. Cloudy. Boys went home. Opened our last barrel of flour. 9. Rain all day. 10. Cloudy with rain. Wrote to brother James - dated 9th. 11. Fine day. Sent Edward and Landry to mill. On getting to Mr. Moss's, hear that the mill was broke and returned with Alfred and Erastus. Finished my letter. 12. Cloudy with some rain. 13. Sent my letter to Post Office by Erastus. 14. & 15. At home teaching. Boys went home. Landry went home on Jack. 16. & 17. Rain and cold these two days. 18. Hard freeze and sleet. 19. Cold. Alcendore hauled wood. 20. & 21. Still cloudy. 22. Clear day. None of the children came to school this week. 23. Frost last night. Cut wood all day and very warm. 24. Some rain. Went to the river. Pierre imprudently pushed me down and broke my arm. Stopped at Mr. Ryan's. 25. Fine day. Edward brought the cart out for me, not being able to ride. 26. Fine day. *27. Sent Edward to Mr. Pujo's for my newspapers. 2. Pleasant day. Taught school for the first time since I got my arm hurt. 3. Rain in the evening. 4. Bob returned with Roulette, having been up at George's since last Saturday. Lent Jack to __?__ to go to Big Woods. 5. Cloudy. Mr. Moss came here. My arm not much better. 6. Rain most of the day. Curtailed my horses' feed. Joe came in the evening to grub. 19. Still warm. Joe grubbing. Mr. Moss's schooner started for Vermillion. 20. Somewhat cloudy. Joe grubbing. Boys went home. 21. Cloudy. Lent Roulette to Prien to go to Francois'. Edward went a fishing. 22. Very fine day. Got a quarter of meat from Pierre. Joe finished grubbing in the forenoon and in the evening cut some wood. 23. Fine pleasant day. Went with my family to Mr. Ryan's to a Mardi Gras dinner. *24. Pontal took Jack to go home. Came home early this morning to get Bilbo's account which I told Mr. Pujo to be presented to him. Returned home. Pontal, Artemise and Landry here. 25. Smoky all day. Landry and Artemise took Jack to go home. 26. Continues fine. Finished my 12 months' schooling. Edward set fire in the pasture. 27. Very warm. Prien cut wood today for me. Pierre came to settle with me. I was owing him $44.18-3/4 cents which he gave up to me. Fed my black sow with pigs. Sent Edward to mill. 28. Fine warm day. Went with Eliza to Mr. Moss's. Took dinner there. Thence started to the Big Woods. Stopped at John Mallet's and was treated very well there. MARCH 1841 1. Detained at John Mallet's all day as consequence of rain. 2. Stormy in the evening with severe gale with hail and rain. Came to arrangement with J. Ashworth. * 3. Fine day. Left J. Ashworth's early. Roulette taken sick before I reached Mr. Wight's, and with difficulty got as far as Jausan Guidry's where I stopped and was politely treated. 4. Fine warm day. Mr. Guidry lent me a horse to come as far as Mr. Moss's. Roulette not able to take me home, Mr. Moss let me have a horse to come home. Planted butter beans. 5. Very hard rain. 6. Fine. Went to Pujo's. Got a hoe for Butler priced 87-1/2f. Took dinner at Mr. Ryan's. 7. Fed my black sow and pigs. Ward came here after supper. 8. Fine. Clearing up the field. Ward here all day. 9. Hard rain. Ward started. Sam hauled me some wood. 10. Very cold, cloudy day with rain. 11. Cold. Planted some bottle gourd seed. 12. White frost. Went to Mr. Pujo's. Got my newspapers. Took dinner at Mr. Ryan's. *13. A little frost. Commenced daubing the school house. Could not finish for want of moss. Fed Melia's and my own barrows. Burnt off the roots in the field. 14. Fine day. At home all day reading my papers. Sally paid us a visit. 15. Pleasant. Edward got moss for the school house. Hoed my onions the second time. 16. Still pleasant. Finished daubing. Made a potato ridge in unploughed ground. 27. A little rain. Pierre commenced the butchery in sixteen shares. Went to the store. Got 25 lbs. coffee, 35 lbs. rice and 4 plug tobacco. 28. Hard rain last night and most of the day. Confined at home. *29. Very fine day. Eliza went with Beckey to the store in Alcendore's pirogue. I went up on Roulette. Got a barrel of flour, a keg of lard, and some small articles. Received a letter from sister Lucy. 30. Pleasant day. Attended school. Made a potato ridge. 31. Employed as yesterday. APRIL 1841 1. (Thursday) Cloudy with a little rain. Traveal brought me a cat fish. Pierre making pasture fence. 2. Weather was as yesterday. At school and made a potato ridge. My arm very weak and sore. 3. Some rain. Pierre killed in the butchery. Planted 7 ridges with potatoes. 4. Rain. Went to the river. Mr. Moss's schooner arrived from Vermillion with corn, etc. 5. Fine day. Employed as usual. 6. Cloudy and rain in the evening. Planted some corn in the little penn. Louis came to make potato ridges - only made four small ones. 7. Fine day. Went in Alcendore's boat to the schooner, thence to the store with draft and bills of exchange on Union Bank for 20 lbs. Got 5 barrels corn and one from Austin. 8. Cloudy. Made two potato ridges and planted them. Got 5-1/2lbs. of sugar from Mr. Ryan. 9. Cloudy with a little rain. Good Friday. Wind S. and SW. Went twice in the woods to look for my black sow's pigs. Could not find them. Supposed them to be dead. 10. Fine day. Arty killed in the butchery. Hauled some wood and did several other odd jobs about home. 11. Cloudy with drizzling rain. Writing most of the day. 12. Fine day. My arm very painful. 13. Fine cold day. Hoed over my onions. Got 1/2 quarter of meat from Pierre. 14. Very pleasant. Replanted corn in the garden. Edward went for the meat killed by Lezime. Mr. Johnson here all day. 2. Pleasant. Mr. Johnson left. The girls went to Mr. Moss's. The boys a fishing. Wrote a letter to Mary Ann; a few lines to Pujo and Mr. Bilbo. Sent them to Pierre's to be taken up. 3. Fine day. Hoeing potato ridges. 4. Pleasant. Employed as yesterday. 5. Appearance of rain. Finished potato ridges and hoed some in the corn. 6. A little rain today. Hoed in the field. 7. Threatening. Hoed in the garden. Emily Cole here. 8. Very hard wind and rain. Went to Mr. Moss's for my meat. Too wet to work in the field. 9. A hard rain. Went to Mr. Ryan's. Detained there until late by the rain. 10. Cleared off pleasant. At school. Hoed some. 20. Eliza went through the pasture to Mr. Michel's. She got some molasses from Christeen Mike and got Mr. Michel to christen Catherine. 22. Warm. Hoed all day. Alcendore brought my meat. Pierre branded three yearlings. 23. Still warm. Went to Mr. Ryan's and the store. Some rain at Mr. Ryan's. None here. 24. & 25. Warm and dry. Employed as foregoing days. 28. Fine rain in the evening. Hoed some. 29. Rain in the evening. Made a few short potato ridges and planted them with vines. Edward went to Mr. Moss's for the butchery meat. Brought me a pair of shoes. 30. Very warm and little drizzle. Went to Mr. Ryan's and took dinner; then, to the woods to look for my hogs. 31. Showers all round. Hoeing during my leisure hours. JUNE 1841 * 1. (Tuesday) Still looks like rain. Wrote to Dr. Edw Delonny. Sent it to Pujo's by Austin. 2. 3. & 4. These three days threatening rain. Hoed in the field and hoed over the garden. 5. Still looks like rain. Went to Mr. Moss's for my meat. Did several jobs about home. Rowe here. 6. Fine day. Went in company with Rowe to the store; then, to Mr. Moss's. Got my bridle rigged. 7. & 8. These two days very warm. Hoed in my field and attended school. 9. Very warm and raining in the evening. Planted a few rows of peas. 10. A very hard wind and rain which bent all my corn to the ground. 11. Fine day. Hoed and hilling up my corn. 12. Pontal killed a cow at Alcendore's. 13. Warm. Went to Mr. Ryan's and the store. Edward and Mary Ann went to Mr. Ryan's in the cart. 14. & 15. Warm and little showers these two days. Hoed and hilled my corn. 16. Threatening rain. Employed as yesterday. Tally started with his beeves. 2. Rain in the morning. Went to Mr. Ryan's with Eliza. Mr. Ryan very sick. Received my receipt for my subscription to my paper. 3. A little rain. At Mr. Ryan's all day. The old gentleman not expected to live, the families of all his children attended. In the evening, he took a turn for the better - think out of danger. 4. Appearance of rain. Came home leaving Mr. Ryan on the recovery. 5. & 6. Showers all round. 7. A little rain. 8. Hard wind and showers all round. 9. A little shower. 10. Very warm. Melia finished the first round of the butchery. 11. Threatening rain. Went to the store. Got 1/2 dozen cups and saucers and 11 lbs. tobacco. 12. Some rain - not enough to do much good. *13. Warm. Took a ride in the woods. Found William Bilbo splitting shingles. Then to Alston's. 20. Still very warm. Started for home. Took dinner at Jacob's thence to Mr. Berry's, then home. 21. 22. & 23. Very warm days. Employed at school. 24. Continues warm. Pierre got me a cow to kill in the butchery. Roulette got a swelling on the belly which Pierre lanced. Borrowed half a barrel of corn from Pierre. 25. Rain in neighborhood. Eliza went to Mr. Moss's. In evening went to Pierre's. 26. A little rain. 27. Received a letter from Mr. Dumartrait with my papers and three for Robert Judd, postage 68-3/4 cents. Wrote to Judd by Alcendore, enclosing his letters. Pulled fodder in the garden. 28. A little shower at daybreak. Pascal and Alcendore started to Franklin. The former got Jack. 29. Very warm. 30. A little rain at night. 31. Cleared off. Went to Mr. Michel's for my meat. The old gentleman sick. Eliza and myself took a walk to Pierre's. AUGUST 1841 1. (Sunday) Rowe took breakfast with me. Went to the store with him. 2. - 6. Remarkably warm and dry. Crops suffering much. Pulled a little fodder these few days. 7. Continues dry and parched. Went to Mr. Michel's for my meat. Found the old gentleman much better. * 8. Rained all round us. Took in my fodder. Wrote to Mr. Dumartrait. Bob and Susette here. 9. Very hot and dry. The children did not come to school. All sick with whooping cough. Gave my letter to Dumartrait to Escubas to be given to Mr. Bourgeois. 10. - 13. Very hot indeed. Pulled fodder these four days. Joe helped me for a day. *14. Still hot and dry. Went to Mr. Michel's for my meat killed by Baxter. *15. Continued warm and dry. At home all day. Filoneeze with the fever. Taken last Wednesday. 16. Threatening rain. Pulled the last of my fodder. Got about 320 bundles well saved. 17. A little shower. Pierre bled Roulette. Commenced a letter to my brother James, dated the 22nd inst. The children very bad with whooping cough. Put a blister to Filioneeze's neck. She very sick with fever. *18. Alcendore returned from Franklin yesterday. Left Pascal at Martin's.?... 19. Still dry and warm morning. Pascal came home yesterday. Got Jack home to feed. He is very poor. 20. Much like rain. Pierre bled Jack. No school this week in consequence of the whooping cough. 21. Wind and rain. Went to Mr. Moss's for my meat. Wrote a few lines to Butler enclosing an order for $6.00 which I was owing him on A. Pujo, dated 22nd. 22. Showers in the morning. Went to Mr. Ryan's, from thence to the store. Pujo had returned from New Orleans. *23. Warm day. Went to Mr. Michel's to see Capt. Lambert. Rode back in company with Pujo. A rain in sight. 24. A little rain. At home all day and heartily tired. (Handwriting very shaky). 25. Some rain. Went to Pascal's and on board of two boats from New Orleans. The children very sick. *26. Rain before day. Pasqualle Grimaldi came here. Made out Smith's and Guidry's accounts for him. 27. A little rain. Went in company with Mr. Moss to Buchanan's. Put my letter to my brother James. Dated 22nd inst. Got my papers and my receipt for $11.00 paid towards my subscriptions to the papers. 28. Threatening rain. Got a horse from Pierre to go to Mr. Moss's for my meat. 29. Very fine rain. At home all day. 30. Very warm. Went to Troisile's for the clothes. Then went to Pasqualle's and got 2 gallons of molasses. Children still sick with whooping cough. 31. Much like rain. Bob and Lambert took dinner with me. Did little jobs about home. SEPTEMBER 1841 1. (Wednesday) Still like rain. Went in the cart to the Bayou. Took eight dozen horns to Pasqualle. Paid for my molasses in chickens. Lambert and wife moved to my old house. Lent Roulette to Alcendore to go over the river. * 2. A little shower. Lambert commenced on Pasqualle's sails. Went to Pierre's, he gone to Bill Lyon's. 3. Most part of this day spent in cleaning my gun and Lambert's. * 4. Hard rain. Went to Mr. Moss's for my meat from Mr. Ryan. Had killed in his place. Lucy very sick. 5. More rain. Lucy's complaint appears dangerous. Melia, Tabby and Mr. and Mrs. Lambert sat up with her. * 6. My Dear Little Lucy departed this life about 1 A. M. Mrs. Lambert's attention was truly laudable. Lambert and Armstrong made the coffin, who accompanied me with a few others to the place of interment. Mrs. Moss was there. Lambert read the service. 7. No rain today. Took Mrs. Ryan down to Pasqualle's. Got two gallons molasses. 8. Cloudy. At home all day. Very dull. 9. Fine. Went to the store. Got one piece domestic, 1 lb. indigo. 10. Warm. Went to the store with the intention of getting a sack of salt. Did not get one as they refused filling up the bags. Got some coffee, tobacco and tea. Took dinner at Mr. Ryan's. 11. Cloudy and warm. Went to Mr. Moss's for my meat. Johnson Moss gave me an order on Pasqualle for $5.00 which he accepted. Went with Lambert to Pasqualle's. The boat at Mr. Michel's. 13. Pleasant. Commenced a letter to Sister Elizabeth, dated 20th inst. 14. Threatening rain. Wrote a little. In the evening went to Pascal's and got a sac of salt for $4.00. 15. A little rain. Brought my sack of salt home. Went with Lambert, Beckey and Eliza in the boat to Mr. Michel's. Got a few articles from a trading boat from New Orleans. 16. Pleasant. Wrote a little. Dug out the well. 17. Cool. Finished my letter to Sister Bess. 18. Warm. Mr. Ryan killed in place of Mr. Moss. Alcendore moved his gentle cattle down to the lake. 19. Went to Mr. Moss's. Gave my letter to Caldwell to be left at Butler's to be sent to the office. Took a look for my hogs going and coming. Could not find them. 20. Very warm. Commenced school after being absent five weeks. After school looked for my black sow. Could not find her. 21. Hard rain in the evening. 22. Very cold. 23. Pleasant. Children did not come to school. Eliza washed at Alcendore's. 24. Warm. Looked for my black sow. 25. Very warm. Went to Mr. Moss's for my meat. A three year old beef was penned at Mr. Ryan's. Late. Took dinner at Mr. Ryan's. Sowed two beds with onions a day before the full moon. Commenced pulling corn. 28. Very much like rain. Pulled corn during leisure hours. Dinner given at Mr. Michel's. We did not go. 29. Lambert brought up rope for Pasqualle's sails. OCTOBER 1841 1. (Friday) Very cold. Pulled some corn. 2. Cool. Arty killed at the butchery. Edward brought the meat. Jacob here. Lent him Roulette to look for his horse. 3. Cool, pleasant. Went to Mr. Moss's. Got my papers and four pairs of shoes. Took dinner there. Got half a quarter of very fat meat from him off the hind quarter. 4. Cool. Pulled only one basket of corn. At school. 5. In evening went with Eliza to Pontal's. 6. Artimise, Jacob very sick. 7. Returned home. Eliza stopped to Tabby's spinning at Pierre's. In the evening brought up black sow and pigs. 8. Warm. Pujo gathering...... 9. (Can't read)..... 21. Christeen Mike died. Alexander LeDoux started with drove. *24. Went to Mr. Ryan's with intention of going to Pine Woods. George not ready. 25. Started to Pine Woods in company with George, Melissa, Edward and Mary Ann. 26. Went with George and Jacob to look at William Bilbo's place, thence to Jacob's. 27. Mr. Jellet came here to see Lambert. 28. Jellet started. Got . . . from Pujo for $15 from Mr. Moss given Lambert. 29. & 30. Dug my potatoes. Went to the store to a daubing. Towe, Jacob and Armstrong here. 31. Jacob and Armstrong left before breakfast. NOVEMBER 1841 1. (Monday) & 2. Cold. At home. Did very little work. Pierre drove a beef of mine which I killed. 3. Cool. Sent my hide to Mr. Moss by Coward. 4. Pleasant. Cut and hauled wood. 5. Cool. Employed as yesterday. 6. Fine day. 7. Started with my cart in company with Jacob to the Pine Woods. 8. Fine day. Commenced work on my house, assisted by Jacob, George and Francois Riviere. Isaac and Berry employed cutting a cypress for planks and other jobs. * 9. - 16. Barclay employed on my house, and on the 17th returned home in company with George and Francois. *20. Fine. Returned to the Pine Woods, and on the 22nd Nero came with Isaac, Berry and __?__. Finished on the 26th, and on the 27th he returned home. 28. Went home and returned 30th. DECEMBER 1841 1. - 12. George and Jacob helping me to finish my house which we finished by making the chimney on this day. Not very well and on the 13th returned home. 14. - 22. Employed killing a few hogs, cutting wood and other jobs. Not much work done. *23. Very cold day. Rode in company with Johnson Moss up to Caesar Guidry's. Gave him my note for $40.00 of this date payable in twelve months. 24. Cloudy. Went to Mr. Ryan's. Met George there. He came home with me. 25. George and myself went to Mr. Ryan's. 26. - 27.
