Put up a few logs. 2 A little frost. Hired George to hew the two house plates, finished peeling the rafters. 3 Warm and cloudy. Finished putting house logs. 4. Warm and a little cloudy. Edward and Olizime went hunting with W. Alston. Sawing the corners of the house. 5 Cloudy, threatening rain. Finished sawing the corner of the house. E. killed a deer. 6 Warm & cloudy. Cut gallery sills and plates, hauled and hewed them. 7 Fine day. Went below in company with Onlizime and Christeen, Took dinner at Needham's; thence to Mr. Moss's, Christeen to Mrs. Ryan's. 8. Hard S. wind. Went to the race thence to the store, got a piece of domestic and other small articles, then to Mrs. Ryan's. 9 Cold. Went with Onlizime to Pujo's, the remainder of the day at Mrs. Ryan's. 10 A freeze. Returned home. 11. Frost. Onlizime's little girl came to school. 12 Cloudy. Sent Grog. to Mr. Hick's. Edward and Onlezime went a bear hunting. 13 Cloudy & warm. Del'd Jack 12 bbls. corn owing to him. Adolph got a large hog from Jacobs. 14 Cloudy with little rain. Edward returned without killing anything. 15 Still cloudy and drizzleg [sic]. Cutting corn stalks all day. Edward killed a doe. 16 The same as yesterday. Jacob and Beckey paid me a visit. Got 2 quarts of beef from James. 17 Rain most of the night, the day showery. Filoneze took the cart to Adolph's. 18 Cloudy & threatening rain. Henry & Isaac commenced writing yesterday. Filoneeze at Adolph's hauling rails. Edward, Onlizime and Mr. Alston went a hunting. 19 Fine pleasant day. E. brot over the hand rails. Filoneeze at Adolph's. E. busy all day. 20 Some frost. Filoneeze brot the cart home yesterday. 21 No frost, and pleasant. _______ washing. 22 Fine day. Adolph accompanied me to the Prairy, he went to Pierre's; I to the store; got a sack of coffee weighing 165 pounds and some other articles, thence to Mrs. Ryan's. 23 Somewhat cloudy. Returned home, brought what coffee and salt we could. 24&25 Rain. Could not attend school. 26. Cleared off. Att'd school. Eliza put up a ps. of cloth. 27 Fine day. E. & A. hog huntg. 28. Cloudy. Adolph went home. 29. Rain all day. 30 Cleared off. Edward and Adolph went a fire hunting. They killed two deer. 31 Clear & cold. E. & Adolph assisting Jacob to raise his smoke house. Cutting corn stalks. February (Tuesday) 1 Cloudy & rain at night. The river very high; no school. Cutting corn stalks. 2 Cloudy with some rain. Eliza, Mrs. Alston & myself went to Jacobs, pd. my taxes for '46 & (47)? [sic] 3 Continues cloudy. Cutting corn stalks. Adolph took the cart home. 4 Very fine day. Tried to cross Doctor to go to Bendry's but could not. Killed a choat. 5 Cool and pleasant. Cutting corn stalks. 6. A little frost. Trimmed some of my peach trees and burnt up a log heap and piles of pine bark. 7 A hard white frost. Came to school. E. & Onlizime cutting logs for a new school house. 8. Fine pleasant day. E. Jas. & F. went to Adolph's to plant. 9 Threatening rain. Hands at Adolph's plantg cane. Mr. Alston went to the P.O. 10 A little cloudy. Hands planting corn at Adolph's. 11 A little shower. Mr. Alston returned, and brought me four newspapers: last no. 876. 12 A very fine day. Burnt off the small log heaps and cut corn stalks. E. & James went to Mr. Alston's. 13 A pleasant day. Elizabeth went with me to Jacobs, rec'd $10.00 from him. Killed a choat. 14 Cloudy with little drizzle. Jacob started for New Orleans. 15. A warm day. Fixing fences. 16 Still cloudy. Repairing fences. 17. Continues cloudy. Adolph workg at the fence. 18 Cloudy with a little rain. Employed as yesterday. 19th. Still cloudy & warm. Cutting corn stalks. 20 Morng cloudy & cleared off, but very warm. Edward killed a young buck and a turkey. 21 Cloudy, warm & a little drizzle. No work done today. Killed a choat. Had a visit from Uncle Jemmy. 22 Fine day. Took dinner at Adolphs. Another day without any work. 23 Cloudy, cold & a little rain. Eliza, Elizabeth & Beckey went to the prairy accompanied by Uncle Jemmy. Adolph measured what corn owing to Mr. Alston. 24 Still cloudy & cold at night. Commenced ploughing yesterday for plantg, but too cold. 25 Cleared off, very cold. Eliza returned. 26. Fine day. Did no work today. 27 Very fine day. Went to the big wood. Got 33 lbs cotton fm Carborn Andrews. Stopped at R. Perkins. 28 Fine warm day. Returned home Paid J. Pm (hand written: James Perkins) postage to 31st March. 29 Cloudy, Phaircheld came to school. Edward, Adolph & Onlizime went below to the supposed Shrove Tuesday. The little sow has 3 pigs. March (Wednesday) 1 A little drizzle in the morning. They returned from the prairy, no annual ball. F. my stalks. 2 A hard rain last night and during the day. Too cold and wet to think of planting. 3 Threatening rain. Commenced on the last long row of corn, in the crib 4 The day fine at night clouded up. Edward went to Mr. Alston's. Cutting corn stalks and wood. 5 A hard rain last night, the day clear & cold. Eliza and family went to Adolph's. 6 Fine pleasant day. Edward went below to a dinner given by Mr. Moss. Haulg rails. 7 A little frost, and clouded up warm. Elore ploughing in the old cow pens. 8 Warm, cloudy & a little rain. Edward returned. Elare ploughing in the forenoon. 9 A hare rain last night from 7 to 9; today clear and cold. Put up the top rails on the fence. 10 Some frost. Edward and others raising the new school house. 11 Partly cloudy. Cutting corn stalks. Got the school house ready to cover. 12 Fine day. At home reading. 13. Fine cool day. Commenced planting old ground. 14 A smart frost. Justoff assisting me to plough and plant. Edward looking for his horse. 15 Very pleasant day. April (Saturday) 1 A little rain. Finished planting new ground. Albert Cne. & Henry sick. 2 Fine pleasant day. Trimmed my peach trees & hoed the onions. Children sick. 3 Warm. Adolph plouing in the new ground. Edward firing the cow penn. 4 Threatening rain. Adolph finished ploughing the new ground & commenced ploughing over the old ground. Filoneeze harrowed over the new ground. Hoeing white corn. Edward working at the penn; in the evening went to Jack's to go a cow hunting. 5 Rain at 3 A.M. and some in the evening. Adolph went for Mrs. Harmen to attend on Mrs. Alston, both horses away. children better these two days past. F. & Jas. workg on the fence. 6 Unsettled and cool. Adolph & Filoneeze ploughg in the old ground. Replantg white corn. 7 Fine pleasant day. James & Adolph ploughing. Filoneeze sick. In the eveng Jas. went to Mr. Alston's. 8 A very fine day. Adolph finished breaking in the old ground. Killed the of the (tea (n) partg?). Yesterday Adolph assisted me to finish the big penns; penned Mrs. Alston's drove of cattle in the evening. 9 A fine day. Mr. A. had a two year old beef killed, got two qrs. Penned the cattle again. Not very well. 10 Fine warm day. Adolph and Edward assisting Mrs. Alson to brand. A. working in the field. 11 Very warm. No horses to be found. A tiger killed white flank's calf. F-neeze still sick. 12 Another warm, & had to send for Mrs. Harman to Filoneeze. Commenced planting corn a second time in the old ground. 13th. Partly cloudy & warm. Caroline delivered from her burden. Had a short visit with James Perkins. Finished planting corn. 14 Fine pleasant day. Finished ploughing. Got a black horse yesterday from Pierre, won at the race brought up by Onlizime. In the evening went to Jacobs, Caroline very sick. 15 Continues cool. Could not find the horses. In the eveng. went to Jacobs'; Caroline sick. 16 Very cool. Took dinner at Jacobs. Neeland attending on Caroline. Eliza went at night. 17 Turned warm. Planted some pop corn, and laid off ridges for potatoes. James made a few hills. 18 Cool & pleasant. Edward made a few potato hills. Jas at Adolph's. Eliza & Mrs. Alson at Jacob's. 19 Very cool day. Caroline & her child died; they were both buried in one coffin. Planted what potato hills were made with red potatoes. Edward with Onlezime and Justoff lookg for horses. 20 Cold all day. Edward looking for his mares. James at Adolph's. 21 Cloudy with a little rain. 22. Fine day. E. made some potato hills. Eliza planted them Got seven newspapers and the first copy of the Ameridan Courier. Thinned a few rows of corn. 23 Cool & pleasant. Jacob took dinner here. Reading my papers all day. E. killed a deer. 24 Very fine day. Finished planting mother potatoes. Eugene solicited me for Eth; refused him. 25 Dry & warm. Took dinner at Jacobs. Edward went to Mr. Alston's Hoed a little. 26 Continues dry. Edward and James at Adolph's; they came home in the eveng. 27 Very dry and warm. Eliza, Mary Ann and Edward started at noon for the prairy, Adolph and James commenced ploughing the big penns. 28 No appearance of rain. 29. A very fine rain. Thinning corn in the evening. 30 Fine day. Reading my newspapers. Eliza and Mary Ann returned from the prairy. May (Monday) 1 A very fine day. Filoneeze thinning corn. Edward & James at Adolph's thinning corn. 2 Partially cloudy. Hands employed as yesterday. Planted some tobacco and cabbage. 3 Very warm. Eliza & Feloneeze hauling rails for a penn in the potatoe patch; commenced making it. Edward & James at Adolph's. Finished the last long row of corn in the crib. 4 Warm and dry. Hands at Adolph's. Finished haulg what rails were in the river. 5 Threatening rain at night. E. & James at Adolph's. After school workg on the cow penn. 6 Very warm and dry. Sowed rice in the big penn. Made a few tobacco hills. 7 Continues warm. At home all day reading my newspapers. Jacob at the prairy. 8 Still warm & dry. Jacob at the prairy. Finished cow penns in the potatoe patch. 9 Very warm. Hoed a little in the sugar cane. E. & Onlezime killed three deer fire huntg. 10 Somewhat cooler today. Hoed a few rows of corn. E. & James at Adolph's hoeg cotton. 11 Cool & pleasant. Arthemeeze here. Boys at Adolph's. Hoed a little in the cane. 12 Very pleasant but dry. All hands employed as yesterday. Got a very sore leg. 13 Continues cool & pleasant. Confined from work with a sore leg. E. & James at Adolph's. 14 Somewhat cloudy. Met Mr. Kirby at Jacobs; he promised to send me a certificate for teaching Public School. E. & Adolph assisted Mr. Alston to pen a two year old beef. Got a fore qr. 15 Threatening rain. Edward & James at Adolph's. Eliza thinning corn in old ground. 16 Cloudy with a fine rain. Hoeing in the stubble cain. The two boys at Adolph's. 17 Some rain in the eveng. Eliza & Feloneeze went to Mrs. Alston's at 4 A.M. Mrs. Alston delivered of a little boy at about 10A.M. Made a few tobacco hills. 18 A few showers. Thinning corn. Planted a few hills of tobacco. Mr. A. went to Jacobs. 19 Some rain. Visiting. Took dinner at Jacobs. Eliza went to Mrs. Alston's. Edward gone with Mr. Bilbo to look for cattle. 29 Continues warm and dry. Adolph assisting hoeing in the old ground. Edward with Mr. Alston. 30 Still warm and dry. A. & F. hoeing. James sent up to assist Mr. Alston. Eliza at Jacobs. 31 Dry warm day. Commenced hoeing the rice. June (Thursday) 1 Cloudy with rain. Went to the Post Office took my letter, got wet on my return. Finished hoeing the rice. 2nd Fine day. Commenced ploughing new ground. 3 A warm day. Went below; had a settlement with the Pujo's, gave my note for balance $196.20 from thence to Mrs. Ryan's with George. 4 Very warm. Went to the store, thence to Mr. Moss's had a settlement with hiim, owing him according to his books $22.- I had credit for more hides than I sent. 5 Warm day. Returned home in company with Onlezime. Ploughing & hoeing. 6 Another Warm day. Mary Ann had a spinning. Nat stopped with me last night. _______ [Taunton? penciled in] commenced working on my new house. 7th. Cloudy and warm with a little rain. Hands ploughg and hoeing. Taunton at work on the house. Edward went to Mr. Alston's. 8 Partially cloudy with a little rain. Taunton made a work bench and worked on the gallery posts. Hands hoeing. ?. not returned. Killed a black hog we had up fattening. Mrs. Alston lost her little baby. 9th. Rain. Eliza & M. George Mike paid us a visit. 4 Some rain. Went to William Lyons to a dinner given to celebrate this day, had to pay 50 cents each, returned home by myself. Adolph ploughing in rice. 5 Warm day. Edward went to Mr. Cole's. Filoneeze & James at Adolph's, he ploughg in the rice. 6 Still dry and warm. Finished hoeing & harrowin the rice. Hoeing in the stubble cane & the orchard. 7 Threatening rain. Hands employed hoeing rice. Myself employed as yesterday. 8 Very dry & warm. Hoeing in the rice. A very hard rain, with a severe blow from the east. Edward went to Mr. Cole's on his way to town. 17 Fine warm day. Planted what potatoe ridges are made. Taunton came up. 18 A very warm day. Made a few potatoe ridges, and Planted them. 19 Still dry. Pulled fodder off the white corn. Finished makg potatoe ridges & laid vines. 19 Rain. Covered vines. Planted a few hills of tobacco. Edward returned home. 20&21 Rain both days. 22 & 23 We had rain both these days. 24 Rain. Commenced pulling fodder on new ground. Taunton cut a tree for laths. 25 A little rain. Pulled a little fodder in the forenoon & brought it in. Taunton left in consequence of some words with Adolph. Hauled some plank fm Jacobs. 26 Rain. No fodder pulled. 27 Very hard rain last night, the creek rose so that I could not get to school. Engaged Taunton to cover my house. No fodder pulled. 28 Threatening rain. Pulled a little fodder. 29. A little sprinkle & threatening for a hard rain. Pulled fodder in the forenoon, bro't it all in, in a hurry. Killed the hog we had up. 29 A very fine day. Mosquitoes very bad. Pulled three half rows of fodder. E. at Mr. Alston's. 30 A little rain. Pulled fodder & bro't in what was pulled in the forenoon. Ed's spotted spayed sow has five pigs. 31 Some rain. Allans negro hung. Had a great deal of trouble taking in & pulling out fodder. Pulled fodder in the evening and brought it to the house. Onlezime went to Prien. August 1848 - Tuesday 1&2 Both, these days pulling fodder & brought in all the fodder & saved it. 3 Very fine day. Finished pulling fodder in the new ground, got in all about 340 bundles. 4 Rain in the evening. No work today. Jacob drove up all his beeves to take to the prairy. 5 Very wet day. Adolph went with Jacob to the Prairy. E. returned and started to Mrs. Bullard's in the eveng. Adolph & myself each got a qr. of a very fat cow. The sow I got from Onlizime came up with eight pigs. 6 A very fine day. Adolph brought a rifle fm Coward & myself. Mrs. Price here. 7 Another fine day. Commenced pulling fodder in the old ground. Finished putting it in the corn crib. Edward gave assistance to Mrs. Bullard's tobacco. Edward also picked a little cotton. 8 Continues fine. Cut some tobacco. Pulled fodder and brought it all in before a little sprinke. Adolph went to the Post Office, he brought my papers, a letter from Mary Ann from Jacob. 9 A little rain. Pulled fodder & brought it to the house. Eliza went to Jacobs, & bro't some corn fm Adolph's. 10 A little sprinkle. Pulled fodder. 11 Fine warm day. Jack & Elizb pulling fodder. Mr. Bilbo took dinner with us. 12 Some rain. James went with me to the prairy, got a little wet; we stopped at Mrs. Ryan's. 13 Fine warm day. in the morning went to Pierre's, took breakfast, thence to Pujo's, got some goods. Thence home. Gave Adolph ? on Vincent for $5.00. Got three sheepskins from Pierre. Onlezime came up with us. 14 Very fine day. Finished pulling fodder. I felt too sore to attend school. 15 A little rain. Bto't in the last of the fodder. Mrs. Alston sick. Eliza there. 16 Some rain. Mary Ann & Adolph at Mrs. Alston's. Tied up fodder, got about 650 bundles. 17 Rain. Ed. returned from Mr. Bullard's. Picked a little cotton at Adolph's. 18 Rain all night and most Of the day. accompanied with a tremendous wind, blowing down several trees, and part of my cane. 19 Cleared off a fine day. The creek rising very fast. E., Jas. & Eth went to A. yesterday. 20 Very fine day. At home reading. 21 Some rain, Cut some tobacco. Moved cow pen. 22 Rain. Beckey delivered of a little boy yesterday. Edward at Mr. Alsont's. 23 A hard shower. Planted a bed with onions, and manured it well. 24&25 Warm and dry. Mr. Alston shold his beeves to Mr. Simons. Arthymeaze here. 26 Very warm. Creek falling. Picked up the corn the beeves throw down. 27 Some appearance of rain. At home reading. Edward returned. 28 Warm day. Sick. 29 Warm. Came to school. September (Friday) 1 A very warm day. A little girl delivered (evidently)(Mary Ann) Eliza at Adolph's. Buck missing. Got my cart home. 2 Some rain. Pulled 5 or 6 rows of white corn and stored it. Fixed little crib & other jobs. 3 Appearance of rain. At home reading. Elizabeth has a very sore foot & myself. 4 A very warm day. Gathered in the white corn and stacked it. Got a fore quarter of a yearling from Onlezime last Saturday. 5 Rain in the eveng. Commenced pulling corn in the clearing, did not get it hauled in. Ah pulling corn in his big field. 6 Fine pleasant day. Hauled in the wet corn, and pulled in the evening. 7 Very fine day. Hauled a load of corn & stacked it; in the evening pulled corn. 8 Continues fine weather. pulled and hauled a load of corn. 9 Finished pulling the corn in the clearing; got 5 1/2 loads. 10 Threatening rain. Edward & Adolph went to Mr. Alston's to go wild beef hunting. 11 Warm. Eliza & myself took dinner at Jacobs, he commenced pulling corn on this side. 12 Cloudy with rain. Saw the eclipse of the moon at 12 1/2p.m. The hunters returned. 13 Some rain. No work today. Jacob went to Isles's settlement on Ball. 14 A fine day. Edward went to the prairy & returned, he got a new hat and pair of shoes. 15 A very warm day. Filoneeze at Jacob's picking cotton. E. went to Mr. Cole's. 16 Fine pleasant day. Got a hind of a fat cow from Jacob. Thence to see him but he had not returned. 17 Fine day. William Gowing came to work at the new house. 18 Very fine weather. Commenced pulling corn on the old ground. Adolph and George sawed a plank for gallery joists. Put up the rafters. 19 Pleasant. Pulled load of corn. 20 Pleasant. Pulled & hauled corn.
