Pulled down and hauled the smoke house. 2 A little rain. Commenced putting up the smoke house. 3 Very warm. Took the cover off one gallery of the old house. 4&5 Fine cold day, rain at night. Killed a spayed sow and barrow out of the spotted gang. Drove and caught Edward's blk sow's pigs. Took off the back gallery. 6 Hard wind and rain last night. Cut up and salted meat. 7 Fine warm day. Put rafters to smoke house. Mr. Stephen Cole here. 8 Turned cool. E. went a bear hunting with Onlezime. Cutting logs in the field. 9 Warm. Put up rafters on smoke house & weather boarded it. Adolph lookg for his hogs. - 10 A little rain at night, day fine. Ed. killed two deer. Covering the smoke house. 11 Fine day. weather boarded smoke house & other jobs. 12 Very fine day. Eliza, Henry & myself went to the prairy. Stopped at Mr. Moss's. 13&14 Continues dry. Thence to Pujo's, back to Mr. M. thence home with ?. 15 Cloudy with rain at night. Weather boarded the kitchen. Spinning at Christeen's. 16 Rain all night & most of the day. The water rose so as to bring the pirogue up to the fence, had to move the potato slips & sugar cane. 17 Some rain. Eugene & E. went to Millreat(?) Adolph & M. A. home. 18 Rain. Put up the house joists. Mr. Alston here. Water falling. 19 More rain. Did no work. M. Ann had a quilting here. 20 Very hard rain last night & wind during the day. Water rising. Jack went home. 21 Cleared off cool. Water rose last night. Killed 3 barrows & one sow, the remainder of the white gang. 22 Very fine cool day. A. & Edward cut up the meat. Planted some fig sprouts & four peach trees in the evg. E. had a spinning here. 23 Cloudy with some rain. Did several little jobs. Eliza went to Mrs. Alston's. 24 Partial Showers. Splitting wood in the field. 25 Hard rain. No work. 26 Rain most of the day; Eugene stocking my plough. 27 Rain. 28 Hard rain with hard thunder & lightning, then cleared off. 29 A little frost. Got the speckled gang up. Cutting wood in the field. 30 A hard frost. Killed four hogs out of the speckled gang. 31 Warm & cloudy. Cut up meat. Splitting wood in the clearing. February (Friday) 1 Cloudy. Splitting wood in the new ground. M. A. had a spinning. 2&3 Fine days. Eliza & Mr. Alston went with me to Mr. Cole's; sold him my beef running at Gowin's for $9.00 & purchased several articles. 4 Pleasant. 5 Fine. E. & Adolph went to look for Mr. Alston's hogs. 6&7 Fine weather. Eugene and Elizabeth went & returned fm the prairy. 8 A very hard rain last night & forenoon, then cleared off cold. 9 Very cold day. E. splitting rails. Cutting corn stalks. Eliza at Jacobs. 10 Fine cold day. At home reading my papers. 11 Frost. A. L. & Eugene splitting rails. E. Clearning: myself cutting cotton stalks. 12 Hard eight hour rain this morning. 13 Rain. ? No work these 2 days. 14 Very cold day. Cutting cotton stalks. Eugene hauled his things down to Adolph's. 15 A hard frost. Employed as yesterday. Adolph splitting rails. Commenced my last row of corn in the crib. 16 Another frost. Helping A. to split rails. 17 A third frost. Edward has been these three last days helping Mr. Frank. 18 Turned somewhat warmer. E. & A. splitting rails., in the afternoon they went to Mr. Alston's a hog hunting. Planted some peach, apple & quince trees. 19 Morning cold. Went below in company with Onlezime; stopped at Arty's, thence in the morning (20th) to Lambert's, thence the store, thence back to Mr. Moss's: received $4.00 fm Lambert on acct. of a cow sold him at the sale. 21 Cloudy & rain at night. returned home found a letter from Wm. Smith. 22&23 Cloudy and warm. Hauled rails. Jacob moved to the lake.(21st) 24 Rain last night; the day fine. Eliza and M.A. went to Onlezime's. Reading. 25 Warm & some rain. Triming peach trees. Put up cow.penn. E. at Jacob's helplg. Frank. 26 Cloudy & drizzly. Employed as yesterday hauling rails. Got Eliza's sow up with seven pigs. Edward's black sow had 7 Pigs last week. Edward not returned. 27&28 These two days very warm. Eugene got home to haul rails at Adolph's. Repairing field fence. Trimming peach trees. March 1850 (Friday) 1 Cloudy & very warm. Adolph hauling rails. Repairing field fence. 2 Warm cloudy and a little rain at night. Adolph laying the worm of the fence first-up what was laid. Adolph went to Mr. Alston's after dinner. E. not returned. 3 Cool & Pleasant. Eliza went to Mrs. Alston's. 4 Cool. Pulling up field fences. 5 Warm: hard S. wind. Put up gap and several pannels of fence and wnt to Bullard's. 6 Warm & rain at 2 this morning, and cleared off pleasant. Hauling rails and putting up fence. E. at home. 7&8 Warm days. Pulling up old fence and finished the last day. 9 Commenced ploughing potato patch. E. & E. went to Mr. Alston's. 10 Cloudy with rain at night. Mr. A. h brot home the 1/2 of 2 hogs killed belonging to Mr.Alston. 11 Cleared off cold. Commenced planting corn: planted the old cotton patch. Lent my oxen to Mr. Alston. Edward went to Jacobs. 12 Warm with some rain at night. Planting corn in the old land. 13 Cloudy with a little rain at night. Adolph, Ed & Eugene went to Alston's log roll'g. 14 Very warm day. A 1 ploughing in the corn. Made some potato hills. Let Jacob have my oxen to haul his corn, etc to the river. 15 Continues warm. Could not find Ball to ploughs. Eugene harrowed the corn with his horse. Eliza and myself went to Jacob's, took dinner there, he has not finished hauling. 16 Fine warm day. Finished plant'g the old ground. Planted white corn in cane patch. 17 Day fine, a little rain at night at home reading. E., Jas. & Eugene went to Jn. M. for sugar & molasses. 18 Fine pleasant day. Planted yellow corn, guinea corn, harhour beans, English peas & pinders at the old house. Fize & Henry at Adolph's. Got a brl. sugar & molasses fm Jim Moss. 19 Cloudy. Set fire in log heaps and cut corn stalks. E. went to the Court house. 20 Very warm. Planted what potatoes got fm. Jacob. Burning logs & cleaning new ground. 21 Fine warm day. Eugene and James went to Pujo's for a barrel of ? . Planted a few hills or tobacco got from Eugene. Reon, E. at Jack's. 26 Some rain this morning. Planted some tobacco. Cut corn stalks. Eugene reon and wife here. two stangers also stopped with us. Got a barrel flour home from Pujo's. 31 Pleasant day. All our company left us. Adolph returned fm Mr. Alston's. APRIL, (Monday) 1 Fine day. Commenced planting new ground. Dr. Sanders here. 2 A very hard wind and rain last night, which blew down 25 or 30 pannels of fence. Repaired it. Adolph planting. The Dr. went home. 3 Very fine day. Finished plant'g. Eliza returned frm Eugene Reon's. brot. a feather bed, 30 lbs. 4 Somewhat cloudy. Planted cotton & pop corn. Planted a few hills of tobacco. 5 Very cold day. Commenced a letter to Mr. Smith dated 8th instant. James harrowed the last corn planted. 6 Continues cold. Cleaning up the rice patch. E. & Adolph went to Mr. Alston's a hog hunting. 7 Partially cloudy. E. & A returned, they found no hogs. 8 Warm. Wrote a little. Planted about 120 hills tobacco. 9 Cloudy with rain at night. E. & Adolph went to Mr. Alston's to go a cow hunting. Not very well today. Planted gourd in even'g. 10 A cold rain. Finished my letter. Planted some tobacco hills. No other work done. 11 Cold disagreeable day. Ploughing in the potato and rice patches. 12 Fine pleasant day. Delivered my letter to the mails and thence to Pierre's; stopped there. 13&14 Both fine days. Went to the store, left Edward's certificate with Pujo, thence to Lambert's; thence again to the store, and came home in the afternoon. Penned in the rice patch. 15&16 Continues dry. These two days replanting corn in old ground and planted some cotton seed. 17&18 Still dry. All hands replanting corn at Adolph's. Stuck and hoed English peas. 19 Cloudy and warm. Jacob here, brought me a letter from Mrs. Lee. E. looking for his mares. 20 A little shower in the morn'g. Made a bean harbour. E. out again after his mares. 21&22 Some what cloudy. Wrote a letter to my Brother James, dated 24th advising him of my having drawn a draft on him for L 5 stlg. in favour of Mrs. Jane Lee, Staffordshire. 23 Cloudy with rain at night. Adolph finished hoeing his big field. E. got his mares. 24 Cold, rain in the eveng. Started to the ferry & returned wet. Planted some tobacco. 25 A Cold rain all day. No work. 26 Cleared off warm. Got some of the wild cattle up. 27 Cloudy with hard wind & rain at night. A. ploughing & hoeing behind the old house. Planted pumpkins. 28 Pleasant. At home reading. 29 Very pleasant. A. ploughing, hoeing & replanting the new ground. 30 Fine day. Finished ploughg old ground. All hands hoeing. May (Wednesday) 1 Partially cloudy. Finished hoeing white corn. Planted a hill pumpkins. Went to Austin's. 2 Cloudy with rain all last night. Went to Austin's, had to return, got very wet. Went to the Post Office. Deposited my letters, thence to the prairy, stopped at Arty's. 3 Rain all night & very hard wind this morng. At 11 A.M. started for home in company with Pujo, Nat, etc., had great difficulty with the road, had to swim it (?) three times. 4 Rain again all last night; it cleared off, but too wet to do any work. 5 Fine Cool day. Commenced butchery. Onlezime killed a 3 yr old beef, took a quarter. 6 Cool & pleasant. At home reading my newspapers. 6 (?) Still Cool. Commenced thinning corn in the clearing. F & Henry at Adolph's 7 Partially cloudy. Employed as yesterday. Small hands clearing potato hills. 8 A very hard wind & rain last night; cleared off. Thinning & hoeing corn. 9 Very fine day. Employed as yesterday. E. & Adolph assisted Onlezime. 10&11 Cloudy with a little rain. Finished thinning corn. F & H returned fm Adolph's. 12&13 Rain most of these two days. From Pierre's went to the store; thence to Onlezime Vincent's. 2&3 Continues warm. Returned home. Finished pulling fodder in the old ground. Working on school house. Tied up fodder. 4 Still dry & warm. Covered school house. Eliza went to A hs. Elizabeth sick. 5 Fine day. Elizabeth delivered of a deformed child. Commenced school with four of my children. Pulled four rows of fodder at the bottom of the clearing. 6 A hard rain this afternoon. Elizabeth's child died yesterday & buried today; she very sick. 7 Very hot today. Pulled a little fodder off the white corn. Killed a three year old gentle beef for the 2nd round in the butchery yesterday. Eliza still attending on Elizabeth; gets no better. 8 A very hard rain. Pulled a little fodder and brought it in. Elizabeth a little better. Eliza still with her. 9&10 Extremely warm these two days. Eliza came home. A. & E. went with Mrs. Alston to kill wild cattle. They killed three & wounded two; brought some meat and grease. 11 A very hard rain. 12 Threatening rain. Pulled fodder in the forenoon & brot it in. 13 Remarkably warm. Pulled fodder & dried what was brot in yesterday. Ah went to Prairy. 14 A very hard rain. Pulled fodder in the forenoon, and brought it all in before the rain. 15 Very warm & fine day. Finished pulling fodder & tied all up; got about ? bundles. 16-18 Weather dry & warm. Repaired perogue and did other little jobs. 19 Continues warm. Mr. Lee came here yesterday. Went to the Post Office, got no papers. 20 Some rain. Mr. Lee deposited $100.00 in my hands to be sent to his wife and gave me an order on Mr. Kirby for $17.00, balance on L 26.00 stlg. 21 A warm day. James went with Mr. Lee to the prairy, he rode black. 22 Continues warm. Wrote a letter to my Sister Bess & one to Messrs. Langors & Co. Edward went to Mr. Cole's. James returned. 23 A very hard rain. Went to the Big Woods. Got very wet. Stopped at Mr. Coward's. 24 Fine day. Deposited my letters in the office, inclosed $100.00 in my letter to Messrs. Ambe. Lanfour & Co; ? . returned home. 25&26 Both very warm days. Frank killed a fat cow in the butchery got fm Mr. Alston. 27&28 Rain these two days. Wrote letters to Mrs. Lee, Andrew McMakin and my Brother James. Drew an order for L 21.. stlg. on my Brother in favour of Mrs. Lee. 29 Rain. Finished my letter. Killed a cow got from Onlezime; he & Austin got each a quarter. 30 A little shower. Sent my letters to the Post Office by Eugene. 31 Very cool & pleasant. September (Sunday) 1&2 Both cool pleasant days. Cut some tobacco. 3 Threatening rain. Cut some guinea corn. Adolph breakg corn in his big field. 4 Some rain. Ah- got the beeves to haul in his corn. 5-9 Some little rain in these days. 10 Very pleasant day. Cut some tobacco & pulled some corn in the clearg. Mr. Jones here. 11 Continues dry. Pulled some corn and shelled to send to mill, sent it by Eugene. 12&13 Pleasant and dry. Pulled corn and brought it in on Peacock in bags. Got a quarter of a cow from Onlezime. 14 Still dry. Very sick today. Mr Adams went to Mr. Kirby's on black. 15 Warm and dry. Better today. Edward started for the town(?) At home reading. 16-18 Dry & warm days, mornings pleasant. Got in all my corn & stacked it. Mr. A. returned. 19 Still dry. Killed the wild blue shoat. Mr. Adams very sick. Jas. gathered a few peas. 20&21 Dry warm days. Wm Brown paid me a visit. Jack killed a beef, got a little meat. 22 Very warm. Went to the prairy in company with Pierre, Adolph & Wm Brown. 23 Some rain. Returned home gave Pujo an order on Mr. Kirby for $17.00 24 Very warm day. Picked a few peas & threshed them out. 25-28 A very hard wind, hail & rain. These four days picking & threshing out peas. 29&30 Very fine days. The last day pickg peas. Onlezime killed for the butchery. October (Tuesday) 1 Pleasant. Cut some guinea corn & picked peas. Mr. Fox brot me a pr of shoes fm Adolph's. 2-5 Very dry weather. Employed picking peas these four days. Mr. Adams went to the ferry. 6 A cool day. 7&8 Pleasant. Finished Pick'g peas & put horse in the field. E. gone to Jack'S. 9 Threatening rain. 10-14 The days warm, night & mornings pleasant. Edward still at Mr. Alston's assisting gathering his beeves. Done very little work these few days. 15 Very warm. Went to Mr. Alston's in company with Eliza and Mary Ann. In the evening killed a yearling out of the herd. Mr. Alston delivered his beeves. i6 Still dry & warm. Adolph went with Mr. Alston to assist in driving the beeves. 17&18 Continues dry & pleasant. Adolph not returned. Cut the last of my tobacco. 19 A hard N. wind last night and turned very cold. 20 Cold. Eliza sick, Sukey came up. 21&22 Very pleasant weather. Eliza very sick. Sukey returned. E. hauling logs to make a pen. 23 The day warm. Made the pen. Austin killed the last creature for the butchery. Eliza delivered of a very male baby, and underwent much alarming pain in her delivery, she was attended by Sukey. 24 Another warm dry day. Found my creek hogs, drove up Eugene's spayed sow and the sow I got from Onlezime with 7 Pigs. Sukey went home. 25 A little rain last even'g; today cold. The baby died, and buried alongside of Elizabeth's. 26 A very hard frost, the first this fall. Commenced using corn out of the big crib on the 21st. 27 Frost. Finished the potatoes out of the patch at the old house. 28 No frost and the day fine. Commenced digging slip potatoe. E. went to Rullard's old place to assist raising a house. 29 Fine day. Digging potatoes 31 Pleasant. Went to the prairy in company with adolph; stopped at Pierre's. November (Friday) 1 Very pleasant day. Returned from below as far as Onlizime Vincent's. 2 Cloudy, with a little rain at night. Returned home. Finished digging potatoes. 3&4 Warm. Mr. Alston brought my papers. Last No. 1021. Missing No. 1009 and 20. 5 Some rain. Eugene Rion died yesterday. Adolph went to see him buried. Attend'g my mare. 6&7 Both fine days. Turned Cold. Opened a potato heap in small patch. 8 Fine day.
