Edward killed a large hog of his on Hickary Branch. 2 Weather as yesterday. Wrote a letter for Pemelia to Mr. J. H. H., Woodward, Texas. 3 Quite warm. Wrote to James. 4. & 5. Cloudy. 6. Fine day. Went to a little hop at Mr. Alston's. 7 Rain. Let Onezime Roya have four carrots tobacco. 8. Cloudy all day, with hard rain at 8 P. M. Jake Harman here from John Reeves'. Sol split 500 rails these two days, got about 1000. 9 Rain all night, and cleared off. Wrote James. Sol splitting rails. Sent letter by Jake. 10 Threatening rain. Sol finished splitting rails, got 1200 in all. 11 Cloudy and warm. Albert returned from the seashore. Sol went to help Jackson with the salt. 12 Still warm and cloudy. Went to preaching at Mr. Alston's by Mr. Smith, small congregation. 13 Cold wet day. Clearing at the end of the field. Helare came up for Ned and Tom. 14 Hard freeze and cold all the day. Albert went with the boys for Eliza. 15 Rain, and cleared off. Made an onion bed. Sol cut wood, and cleared a little. 16 Fine day. Planted my onion bed. Sol employed as yesterday. Eliza returned fm the prairy. 17 Wet, drizzly day. Sol hauling rails from field fence. 18.&19. Both days cloudy and warm. 20 Rain, with hail at night. Made & planted onion bed. Got blk barrow up with bell on. 27 Fine warm day. Trimming fig trees & planted some sprouts. Killed the above barrow. 28 Partially cloudy & warm. Eliza went to Ike's at 11 P.M. Catherine delivered of a little girl. 29 Rain. Sol ploughed a little in the pasture. Eliza returned. Planted nectarine trees. 30 Rain all the forenoon. Planted some peach trees. Eliza went at 11 P.M. to Mr. Rosbon's. 31 Rain. Planted out a few peach trees. Boys firing fence. February (Saturday) 1 A wet day. Planted some sugar cane. 2. & 3. Both days rain. Bridge gully high. 4 Cloudy and cold, but no rain. Firing fences. Planted more peach trees. 5 More rain, and turned warm. All hands employed as yesterday, as well as myself. 6 Cloudy with a little rain. Had a log rolling. Eliza came home, and returned. 7 Rain, and very cold. Albert & Sol went to Mathew's log rolling. Cooly went to Adolph's. 8 Very cold, with rain. 9. Cleared off. Eliza came home from Rosbea's. Albert at muster. 10 A hard frost. Sol at Ike's log rolling, he crossed the horse, Eliza got from Mr. Roshea. 11 Frost. Planted some sugar cane. 12. Frost. Made & planted a bed with onions & peach trees. 13 Rain. Grubbing Jerusalem oak. 25 Day dry, and very hard wind and rain at 9 P.M. Sol hauled Ike's came from Edward's, afterwards put up some fence. Delivered Mr. Roya the yoke of oxen in part payment for his horse. 26 Very fine warm day. Albert went to the prairy yesterday. Putting up fence. 27 Warm & clear. Employed as yesterday. 28. Fine day. Sowed tobacco seed. Splitting stakes. March (Saturday) 1 Quite warm. Sol putting up fence. Albert making gap posts. 2 Wind turned to North, with hard wind & little rain. Reced seven papers of the Delta to 15th ulto(?). 3 A freeze. Sol hauling rails. Finished grubbing Jerusalem oak. Albert at sundries. 4 & 5 A little frost both days. Jake hauling rails. Albert and Sol firing fence. 6 A hard freeze. Eliza, Albert and myself went to Adolph's in the afternoon. 7 A cold day. Went to the Lake; Albert and Henry volunteered. 8 A little cloudy. Finished planting old ground. 2 A little rain last night, day cloudy and warm. Planting turnip patch. Jackson finished ploughing. Bell & Jacob returned. Albert's horse missing. 3 & 4 Both days dry & warm. Went to look for Albert's horse, heard of him at Salter's. Returned home in company of Mr. Olson. I made and manured some hills for tobacco. Albert took the oxen to Adolph's on the 1st inst. to plough his potato patch. 5 to 7 Dry. Hoeing on the other side. Made and manured a few more hills of tabacco. 8 Warm. Hy & Eli Berry started for Annacoca. Del & Martha Ryon here & returned. 9 Weather the same. Hoeing and ploughing cane and cotton. Planted some more vines. 3 Threatening rain. Ploughed for potato ridges, and planted some vines. 4 & 5 Dry and warm. Cut the first cutting of tobacco, not very good. 6 & 7 Warm and dry. Let Henry have Salem for his place on the other side, which he exchanged with Reese Perkins for another to go to Opelousas. 8 A good rain. Planted some vines. Potatoes finished today. 9 & 10 Both dry days. Albert and Sol went to work at Adolph's. Albert returned in the evening. 11 Very dry. Lafe left here with Mr. Ritter. Fixed little crib with some new logs. Strung some tobacco. 3 Rain. Commenced gathering corn, got a wagon load. 4. Rain. Hauled 1/2 load, very wet. 5 Fine day. Shearing sheep. 6. Very fine day. Got not quite a wagon load cut of turnip patch. 7 Still clear. Sol's finger bit by a hog. 8. Warm. Sol & Jake pulling corn at Mr. Alston's. 9 Fine day. Cut tobacco yesterday. Mary Ann here. 10. Eliza very sick. 17. A hard rain. The Doctor left. Eliza taken very sick at 4 P.M. 18 & 19 Fine days. Eliza a little better. Mary Ann Reeves came here (19). No work. Sol sick. Edward killed a fine three year old beef, got most of it. 20 Fine, pleasant day. Eliza better today. Dr. Kirkman came by, request of Jake. 21 Cool & Pleasant. Sol and Louis sick. Mary Ann Reeves returned home. 22 Fine day. Cut tobacco & picked cotton. 23. Like rain. M. Ann here. Robert got the mumphs. 24 & 25 Both fine days. Finished picking cotton over the first time. 26 & 27 Fine days. Got a pari of shoes from Adolph Derosier. Got a qr meat from Mr. Alston. 28 Warm. Albert with sore eyes & mumps. 19. Pleasant, with S. wind in the evening, the first for a week or more. Broke in the remainder of the corn on the side, 1/4 of a load. 30 Fine warm day. Cut tobacco. Albert hauled in his pumpkins. Put horses in the field on the other side. October (Wednesday) 1 Several hard rains today. Very little hand picking done. 2 A little rain. Picked peas, and threshed out what was dry. 3 Rain. Picked some peas. 4. Very fine day. Picked & threshed out peas. Albert started to Adolph's to meet a party to oppose the "Yankees", landed at Lake Charles. 5 Fine day. Heard the reports of seven guns fired by the Yankees. Albert went to meet them. 6 Threatening rain. Albert returned. Picking peas and cotton. 7 Rain. Employed as yesterday. Eliza taken with the ague and fever. 8 & 9 Rain. Sent for Dr. Lyons via Polk, he sent medicine. Mr. Alston's child died yesterday. 10 & 11 Rain in the night. Albert & Ike went to the Lake, Jake with them to bring the horses home. Cleared off cold yesterday and pleasant. Jake returned. (12th) Picking peas. Cut rice. 14 Fine cool pleasant day. Picking peas. Put the horses in the field. 15 & 16 Both cool pleasant days. Picking peas for horses. Sent Sol in the cart to Ike's. 17 Still cold. Sol brot my large stag home, put him in the field. Hauled wood. 18 Fine pleasant day. Cut tobacco, and did other little jobs. 19 & 20 Continues clear and pleasant. Picking cotton. Eliza and Sol sick. 21 Pleasant. Albert, Ike, Polk & Tom Knapp started for Camp Pratt, and returned. 22 Wind S.E. & clear. The boys started again by way of Lake Charles. Jake with them. 23 Fine day. Randolph Humphreys died and was buried. Jake returned. 24 Continues clear and pleasant. Sol employed at sundry little jobs. 25 A little rain before day and cleared off cold. John Eason brought Albert's horse home. Sol went to Mr. Alston's to work, took the oxen, and returned at 1 P.M. 26 A hard freeze, the first. 27. A hard white frost. Hauled wood. Picked cotton & cut corn. 28 A light frost. Finished cutting corn. Sol brought 2 of Jim's sows up with 6 pigs. 29 No frost, but cold. Digging potatoes. Jake took the ploughs to Knapp's. 30 Fine day. Sol went to Ike's, and Jacob hauled wood for Edward. Wrote to Albert and Church. 5 Cleared off cold. Eliza returned from Joe Lyons'. Mary Ann with her. 6 A hard frost.
