A native of Bronson, Texas, she was a longtime resident of Westlake. She was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of Houston River Baptist Church and Eastern Star. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today in the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Tuesday in church. Dr. Lyons died at 7:42 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, in a local hospital. A native of North Little Rock, Ark., he lived in Lake Charles since 1956. He graduated from North Little rock high school and received his bachelor of science degree from Arkansas State Teachers College (University of Central Arkansas) and his master of science degree and Ph.D. from Northern Colorado University. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a teacher, basketball coach, and superintendent of schools in Hermitage, Ark. from 1949-55. He taught at the Old Gillis High School in Moss Bluff in 1955. From 1956-85 he was a professor in the Education Department at McNeese State University. While at McNeese, he was in charge of the Student Teaching Program, head of the Department of Secondary Education, Assistant Dean of Education, and head of the Education Graduate School. He was best known for teaching Philosophy of Education and Principleship classes. At McNeese he served as chairman of the Ambassadors Program, a scholarship program for top students to represent the University at various University functions. Upon his retirement, he was the head of the Department of Administration and Supervision. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa national honor society for educators and a member of the Southern Association for Schools and Colleges. His awards included the McNeese President's Cup for Outstanding Educator, 20-year pin from McNeese Alumni Association for Outstanding Work, Lifetime Administrators and Teachers Certificate, and, upon his retirement, he was named as Professor Emeritus. A deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church, he was a Louisiana high school basketball official for many years. A member of the Rose Society and a Rosarian. the Southwest Rose Society dedicated their annual show to him in 1995. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Meharq Lyons; one son, Robert Scott Lyons of Lake Charles; two brothers, Harvey Lyons of Harden, Texas, and Neal Lyons of Houston, Texas; one sister, Mildred Cash of North Little Rock; and four grandchildren.
