Mr. McMillan died at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1996, in his residence. A native of Opelousas, he was an Army veteran of World War 11, serving in the military police. He had lived in Lake Charles for the past 38 years and retired from Conalo after many years of service. He was a volunteer in pastoral care at St. Patrick Hospital and also worked in the Catholic Prison Ministry at Phelps Correctional Center in DeQuincy. He was a member of the Crusillo at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Survivors are his wife, Agatha Higginbotham McMillan; three sons, Dr. John E. McMillan of DeRidder, Charles E. In 1942, he was appointed as a Democratic page to Sen. "Cotton Ed" White. In 1944, he graduated valedictorian from the Capitol Page School, receiving his diploma from Eleanor Roosevelt. He served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps in the Panama Canal Zone and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1949, he received a bachelor degree in economics from the University of Virginia. He worked in the insurance industry in New Orleans with Liberty Mutual, the Kemper Insurance Group, and Central Mutual Insurance Company. In 1957, he moved to Lake Charles to work for the W.J. Moreau Insurance Agency. After working for the American Mutual Insurance Company of Houston, he returned to Lake Charles in 1969 where he became vice president of the Louisiana Companies and manager of the John L. Wasey Insurance Agency. He retired in 1996 from the Louisiana Companies and worked as the vice president of Gulf Coast Casualty Insurance Company of Lake Charles until becoming a self-employed insurance auditor. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on the administrative board. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Sowela Campfire Council, and the Propeller Club. He had also been a part-time photographer with the Lake Charles American Press. He had served as a part-time deputy sheriff with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriffs Office, was a past president of the Optimist Club, served on the Good Samaritan Council and the Boy Scouts Council. Murphy served in the Pacific Theater during World War 11, receiving four Battle Stars, a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Medal. He received a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from the Michigan General Motors Institute in 1942 and a B.S. degree in economics from McNeese State University. He was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus, a lay minister, and retreat captain for 47 years at Our Lady of the Oaks Retreat House in Grand Coteau. She was active in the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, the Perpetual Adoration Society at St. Catherine, the A.V.M.A. and TX.M.A. auxiliaries.
