LCAP 2/23/1924 Typed by Vern Humphrey FUNERAL OF LATE JOHN F. CLOONEY SUNDAY AFTERNOON Services at Church With Burial at Graceland Decedent Was One Of Oldest Residents Had Much To Do With Development of This Part of Country In the death yesterday of John F. Clooney, Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish lost a pioneer citizen who not only was one of the oldest residents of his section but also one whose life was closely associated with the development and growth of this part of the country. He was a near-nonagenarian, having passed his 87th birthday. For more than half a century he lived in and near Lake Charles, and having been engaged for many years in the construction and repair of ships his acquaintance was not restricted locally, but he was well known in the trade territory of the Southern states along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Mr. Clooney's death marks the close of an eventful career. Starting ship work near Boston, Mass., while a young man, he first served his trade in the shipyard of Roosevelt - Joyce, the former being the father of the late President Theodore Roosevelt. Later he was employed on "The Great Eastern," the ship which laid the first cable under the Atlantic ocean. A number of years afterwards, he was presented with a piece of this cable, a souvenir which he especially cherished. He also had the opportunity of seeing the propeller of the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. Soon after reaching his majority he case his first vote in the Lincoln presidential election. On several occasions he visited Chicago at a time when "it was nothing but a swamp" he told friends in later years. Almost up until the time of his death he continued to be active and energetic. He was fond of outdoor exercise especially walking, and only four days ago he walked from Lake Charles to his old home place below the Calcasieu river bridge, a distance of about three miles. Despite his advanced years, he never used a walking cane and as his eyesight remained clean and distinct, he never wore glasses in reading. Funeral tomorrow: Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon. The procession will leave the residence of his son, Thos. J. Clooney, 1612 Grove Avnue, at 2 o'clock and will proceed to the Catholic church. Reverend Father Cramers, pastor of the church of the Immaculate Conception, will have charge of the services. Burial will follow in Graceland cemetery. John Francis Clooney was born in St. John, New Foundland, October 14, 1836. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Clooney, who came from Ireland. He lived in New Foundland for 16 years and then moved with his parents to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. After spending four years there, he went in a schooner to East Boston. Near the close of the Civil war, he was drafted into the federal army at Alexandria, Va., and went by water to New Orleans. After the end of the war, he settled in Galveston, Texas, and he was the first to open the wooden bridge over the Trinity river near Liberty, at the close of hostilities. Came Here in 1869: While in the contracting business in Galveston, yellow fever broke out and in endeavoring to leave that city, he heard about the "piney woods" in Louisiana. Getting aboard a schooner in 1869, he came to Calcasieu parish were he became employed at the old Kaough shipyards above Moss Lake. Lake Charles was a mere hamlet at that time. He married Miss Mary Kaough in 1871, and soon afterwards started his own shipyards. At that time many negroes were used to pull ships out of the water and when he employed oxen, instead, he caused a sensation in the business. In 1884, he moved below the Calcasieu bridge where his home was always kept open and he and his wife were noted for their hospitality. As an example of their generosity they reared 13 orphan children at various times. Mrs. Clooney died in 1895. Since 1918 he made his home in Margaret Place with his son, Thomas. Mr. Clooney's parents were among the "forty-niners" going to California by way of Panama. The deceased is survived by three sons, James, Thomas, and John, all of Lake Charles, and three daughters, Miss Margaret and Mrs. Julia C. Russell, both of Houston, Texas, and Miss Agnes, of Brownwood, Texas. He is also survived by two aged brothers, James of Oakland, Calif., 83 years of age, and Robert of Copay, Calif., 74 years old.
