Harold was born on February 22, 1923 in Youngsville to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dautriel and grew up in Lafayette. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy on January 26, 1942 in Lafayette. He served as Navy/Marine Corpsman, PMI Pharmacistmate 1st Class with the 3rd Marine Division, 2nd Battalion. While serving, he had been stationed in the Soloman Islands, Guadacanal (1942), Bougonville (1943), Guam (1944), and Iwo Jima (1945). He was awarded by Army Captains stationed at Guadacanal, Commondation Unit Citation, A.P. Ribbons, Four Battle Stars, numerous Battle Ribbons and Medals, Good Conduct, Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Pacific Combat Navy and Marine Medals. He married Gladys Mary Courville of Lafayette on October 8, 1945. Mrs. Dautriel also serves as a lifetime member in the Ladies Auxiliary, Marine Corp League. He owned his own business as a self-employed journeyman and master plumbing and heating contractor for over 60 years. Even after “retirement,” he continued to enjoy putting his experience to work to help elderly people in the community who had plumbing needs. He was a Lifetime Member of the Marine Corp League, Southwest Louisiana Detachment, he was Chartered by Congress in Washington, D.C., was two time winner of Recruiter of the Year and Marine of the Year Award, received the Gold Medal Award for the Calcasieu Parish Office of Community Services, was Lifetime Member of the Lake Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars, PLM7198, Lifetime Member of the Sulphur Veterans of Foreign Wars #158891, Former Member of the Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs and Calcasieu Civil Defense. He had participated in the 1991 O.C.S. Food and Toy Drive, was active with the Calcasieu Office of Community Service, served as Chairman for Toys For Tots from 1987 to 1991, and was a former Eagle Scout who worked with the State Police and Boy Scouts of America. Harold enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. He was an avid farmer on his farm in Singer, including timber farming and gardening, sharing the fruits and vegetables of his labor with everyone around him. He spent much of his time visiting the schools throughout Calcasieu and Beauregard parishes to show Iwo Jima landing films to the children and share a little of the American History he experienced in his life with the younger generations. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Gladys Courville Dautriel; one daughter, Patricia Vidrine of Sulphur; two sisters, Evelyn Domingue and Rose Deshotel, both of Lafayette; two grandchildren, Danielle West and Darbi Conca; and five great grandchildren, Gavin, Garren, and Garrick West, Hadley Trahan, and Kiersten West. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. The Rev. Joe Gosselin will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines South Cemetery in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with a Rosary service at 7 p.m..
