Hazel William Wilfred ‘‘Bill’’ Hazel, 85, of Lake Charles died at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in a local hospital. Mr. Hazel was born in New Orleans on Feb. 18, 1919, to Charles Hazel and Mathilda Kieffer. He moved to Lake Charles in 1949 and worked for I.L. Lyons from then until he retired. He was devoted to his wife, Irene, and his children, Diane Hazel and Jean Miller, who preceded him in death. He is survived by children Charles Miller of Tallahassee, Fla., and Linda Herforth of Merced, Calif. He had two sisters, Eleanor Ruff and Cecile Hazel, and one brother, ‘‘Monk’’ Hazel, who also preceded him. Other survivors include a nephew, Richard Ruff of New Orleans, five grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. Mr. Hazel loved music and acquired a taste for New Orleans jazz from his brother, ‘‘Monk,’’ and together they assembled a large collection donated to the Tulane University archives. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Hazel served honorably in the Army Air Corps and since then maintained an active membership in the American Legion for more than 59 years and was conferred a life membership for his tenure and service. A devout Christian and dedicated long-term member of the University United Methodist Church, Mr. Hazel served as an usher and a conscientious member of the Church Pantry Committee until recent health problems slowed him down. One of his favorite pastimes was participation in the McNeese Cowboy Club, and he especially enjoyed its cookouts and gatherings before the games. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, at University United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike McLaurin will officiate. Burial will be in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today, May 13, in the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. Friday until the time of services in the church.
