Mr. Cook died at Thursday, June 1, 2000, in a local hospital. He graduated from Jennings High School and McNeese State College, where he played for the Cowboys football team. He was an employee of the American Press during the 1950s. He also worked as a reporter for the El Paso Times and as a bureau chief for United Press International in New Orleans and Kansas City, Mo. He was a public relations executive, journalist and North Hawaii community leader. He served in the U.S. Navy. In 1963, he moved to Hawaii and became a reporter and planning writer for The Honolulu Advertiser. He helped write the City and County of Honolulu's Model Cities grant applications, winning millions of dollars for the communities of Kalihi-Palama and Waianae. In 1968 he joined Millici Advertising Agency. He was selected in 1969 as the mayor's special assistant on housing and urban affairs. In 1972 he joined, and later bought, Communications Pacific Inc., a public relations firm. He won Hawaii's first Silver Anvil, a national award for public relations, for a pilot community project he developed on behalf of Bank of Hawaii. He moved to Waimea in 1985 after selling Communications Pacific Inc. He became executive director for the Kona-Cohala Chamber of Commerce and the Hawaii Island Geothermal Alliance. In 1987 he became the business development administrator in the Department of Business and Economic Development. He retired in 1991 and helped launch a family business known as Cook's Discoveries, a retail shop that sells Hawaii products. He was a member and past president of Waimea Exchange Club and Friends of Thelma Parker Memorial Library. He was also a member of St. James Episcopal Church and Hawaii Alliance for the Future. He was named to the Hawaii Hall of Honor by the Public Relations Society of America's Hawaii Chapter in 1997. He also received the Richard Smart Community Achievement Award in 2000.
