A native of DeRidder, she lived in DeQuincy. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a retired RN from Dr. Bishop Hospital. Mr. Baker died at 7:35 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, in a local hospital. A lifelong resident of Lake Charles, he was a graduate of LaGrange High School. He served in the Navy for eight years, participating in the Korean War. He owned and operated Cowboy Service Station on Ryan Street for many years. He was a machinist at Montel for 20 years. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Knights of Columbus and VFW Post 2130. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Tramonte Baker; two brothers, James R. "Jimmy" and Jerry N. Baker, both of Lake Charles; and one sister, Daisy "Sis" Baker Deaton of Woodlawn. Msgr. Benedict died at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in a New Iberia hospital. He was ordained in 1943 and became the founding pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in 1949. He was instrumental in the construction of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and School. He served as pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oakdale and St. Margaret Catholic Church in Lake Charles. He was elevated to monsignor in 1970 and in 1974 was appointed Assoc. Vicar of Administrative Affairs for the Diocese of Lafayette. He retired in 1979. Survivors include one sister, Sister Angela Benedict of Oldenburg, IN. Mr. Birkett died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, in a Lake Charles hospital. A native of Tullamore, Ireland, he was a master carpenter and his work is in many cathedrals and monasteries in Ireland. He came to the United States in 1956 and worked for Grumman where he was involved with the space program and the lunar module. He retired from the City of New York in 1985 where he was in charge of maintenance at Chase Stadium. A resident of Montgomery for 13 years, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Plantersville where he was the organist. He was a member of the Ancient of Hibernia and the Knights of Columbus Council 4054 of Anderson, Texas. Survivors include one son, Edward J. He was a graduate of the Louisiana State University Law Enforcement Institute. After his retirement from the police department, he worked by PPG for 23 years, serving as director of plant security from 1979-1985.
