All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Death Takes Dr. Murphey: Physician Dies in Monroe Following Long Illness Monroe, Dec. 9 (Special)- Dr. Joseph White Murphey, 66, well-known physician of Monroe, died at a local hospital Thursday morning afetr a long illness. The funeral will be held at the residence, 1012 Jackson Street, Friday at 3 p.m. The Rev. Ernest Duncan Holloway, pastor of the First Presbytyrian Church, will officiate being assisted by the Rev. A.M. Serex, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Peters Funeral Services, Inc., will be in Riverview burial park. Active pallbearers will be local physicians: Doctors D.J. Hirsh, W.E. Jones, A.G. McHenry, D.M. Moore, J.Q. Graves, A.L. Peters and B.M. McKoin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ouachita Parish Medical Society. Dr. Murphey was born in Olla Nov. 23, 1877, and received his medical education at the University of Nashville. He began the practice of medicine in Kelly and later was similarly engaged in Winnfield and Shreveport successively. He removed to Monroe about 1926 and for some years maintained offices in the Ouachita Bank building. He was a member of a number of medical organizations which included the State and Parish Medical Societies. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Frank F. Smith, Lafayette, La.; two brothers, C.C. Murphey of Farmerville, Lieut. Col. W.W. Murphey, U.S.A., somewhere in the Philippines where he is held prisoner by the Japs; a sister, Mrs. Belle Leslie, Grayson., La., and two granddaughters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
