Newsom Held Mon. Morn. Prominent In Affairs of Parish For More Than Fifty Years Samuel R. Newsom, pioneer citizen of Winn Parish, who died at his home in Hickory Valley Sunday was buried in Sikes Monday at twelve noon. Funeral services beautiful in simplicity were conducted by Rev. L. D. Emmons, for a number of years the pastor and life-long friend of Mr. Newsom. He was the son of William and Mildred Newsom and was born seventy nine years ago near the site of his home in the eastern part of the parish. Mr. Newsom was educated in the public schools of the parish and by close application and hard study he supplemented this limited training by his own efforts until he was qualified to become a school teacher, and from 1876 to 1904 he was a teacher in the schools of Winn and Caldwell Parishes. Since 1904 Mr. Newsom has been engaged in farming and stock raising, in which he attained unqualified success attributing his success to his love for the farm and application of patient industry. In 1877 Mr. Newsom and Miss Mary Wallace, sister of the late J. T. Wallace, were married. To them were born ten children, six of whom survive him, Walter, C. M. , Hugh A., J. Roy, Louis T., S. R. Jr. Elected Justice of the Peace in 1901, he served his fellowmen in that capacity until 1912 when he was elected Police Juror from Ward 3 and at the expiration of that term of office in 1916 he again became Justice of the Peace, which office he held until his death. For more than fifty years he was a loyal and consistent member of the Baptist Church, serving as deacon for thirty years of that time also as moderator of the Shady Grove Association. His life as a Christian and citizen endeared him to the host of people who knew him. both old and young came to him for advice and counsel and none were ever turned away. His community has lost a leader, the parish, state and nation a citizen, the church a loyal member and his family a wise and loving counselor.
