Lou Rutland, widow of the late J. B. Rutland, aged 72 years. Interment was made in Columbia cemetery Monday evening. The deceased was stricken about four weeks ago, and was carried to New Orleans, where an operation was performed at Touro Infirmary. He[r] condition had improved sufficient to bringing her home, which she had requested, and relatives left New Orleans with her Saturday evening. Her condition grew considerably worse after leaving New Orleans and she expired in a few minutes after reaching her home here. Mrs. Rutland was one of the pioneer residents of Columbia, and since the death of her husband, had been associated with the late T. J. Waggoner in the mercantile business under the firm name of M. L. Rutland & Company. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church and for many years an active worker in the cause of Christianity; she was a woman of charitable impulse and contributed liberally to any cause that was for the good of the community, and her death is like a personal lose [sic loss] to every citizen in the community.
