Waggoner, for [many years] a leading figure in financial, social and religious circles in this community, died at his home here Tuesday morning at 1:50 o'clock, after an illness of less than a week with pneumonia. The death of Mr. Waggoner has cast a gloom over a wide circle of friends in all walks of life. The funeral services took place at 10 o'clock Wednesday at the Methodist church, of which deceased had been a member since youth, and at his death being a leading steward. The W. O. W., of which order Mr. Waggoner was a prominent member, conducted the corpse from the church to the cemetery on the hill where their services were held. Mr. Thomas J. Waggoner was born in Catahoula parish on January 23, 1858, and removed to Columbia when about 16 years of age. He accepted a clerkship with the late J. B. Rutland in the year 1882. After the death of Mr. Rutland he became associated in the business, which has since been conducted under the firm name of M. L. Rutland & Co. Though his firm had many misfortunes, having been burned out several times, under his shrewd business management it has always done a successful business. Mr. Waggoner was one of the organizers of the Caldwell Bank, and as served as vice president since its organization in 1902. Mr. Waggoner leaves a wife, who was Miss Lou E. Sims, a mother and two brothers W. H. and J. W. Waggoner and a sister to mourn his untimely death. No worthy man and no worthy cause was ever turned down by Mr. Waggoner. He was a friend to the poor man and a friend to the negro. He was liberal in purse and liberal in spirit. The hand of want never returned from him empty. He was a tender and generouse husband, son and brother. True, his loss is deeply mourned by all who knew him. Peace to his ashes. Additional Comments: Buried in Columbia Hill Cemetery inside a fenced area. His grave marker gives his birthday as Jan. 23, 1859. However, the 1870 Census for Catahoula Parish reported his age as 2 years; the 1880 Census for Caldwell Parish as 22 years, in agreement with the date given in his obituary. The 1900 Census for Caldwell Parish gave his birth month/year as Jan. 1859, in agreement with his grave marker.
