Eloi Hebert Family, History: Cameron Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Macile Hooper LeJeune After passing through many hands, this document reached the Cameron Parish File Manager and was submitted on Aug. 27, 2006 ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** "This is Grace Credeur's story of HEBERT COUNTRY: The Eloi Hebert Family ELOI HEBERT was born on ll-10-1799t son of JOSEPH HEBERT, Jr. & MARGUERITE TRAHAN. He was christened on 5-16-1800 @ St. Martinville Church, on 2-15-1819. Eloi married CELESTINE BREAUX, daughter of JEAN BAPTISTS BREAUX & MARIE MADELEINE GIROIR. CELESTINE is the Granddaughter of FIRMIN BREAUX & MARGUERITE BREAUX, for whom Breaux Bridge, La. is named, (or his son ?) ELOI's Grandfather, JOSEPH HEBERT was also one o>f the founders of Breaux Bridge, LA. ELOI HEBERT & CELESTINE BREAUX had 13 children; most of them were christened @ St. John Church in Lafayette, LA. Some were married there also. The Tax roll for Lafayette Parish from 1865-1870, ELOI HEBERT paid $3.00; $56 Parish tax and $^.17 State tax. He was not living on the property then. Around 1870, ELOI and his family were living in Cameron Parish what is known today as Big Lake, LA. or Grand Lake, La. ELOI HEBERT and his whole family went to live @ Big Lake, LA.; except his son, ALEXANDRE, married to Euphemie MIER and his Grandson, JOSEPH DUPRE HEBERT, married to Euphemie MIER, who was ALEXANDRE HEBERT wife's niece. The Aunt and the niece had the same name. Probably the reason that they did not go to live in Big Lake, LA. was because of his wife's family-that did not want to go! The MIER Family settled in Acadia Parish and were prominent families. ELOI HEBERT went to Big Lake because he & his sons heard that there was a lot of land there that they could get by just building a fence around it. ELOI HEBERT built his home on a big hill right on the Intercoastal Canal levee. By Dec 6, 1873, CELESTINE BREAUX died. They had an inventory of $17,153.15 total property. The Taxes for the year 1873 was Parish Tax $98.36 and State Tax $72.31. They had a lot of cattle & horses. Also a lot of wild horses. Eloi Hebert then married again to EMMA GUILLORY. No children were born to them. In 1881 ELOI HEBERT died. The property divided between his heirs. He also gave land for a cemetery in Big Lake, which was called HEBERT CEMETERY until in 1976 the name was changed to Big Lake Community Cemetery. Most of the ELOI HEBERT FAMILY is buried in the cemetery. In Sept of 1978 LUCIEN TRAHAN, ALONCEL CREDEUR TRAHAN, JOHN CREDEUR & myself (Grace Credeur) visited Big Lake, LA. The cemetery is well kept. Has a Hurricane fence around it and is located on a hill. We visited Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Blanchard. Mrs. Blanchard was ALZIRE HEBERT, daughter of ONEZIME HEBERT, grandson of SOSTHENE HEBERT, son of ELOI HEBERT, who lives on the old property where the old ELOI HEBERT HOME was. Big Lake, LA. is a small community mostly descendants of ELOI HEBERT'S Family. You take the Hwy from Lake Charles until you get to "Boone's Corner". That is a small grocery store. You are about on the middle of what was the old ELOI HEBERT property. Follow Hwy and make a curve. You will see where you turn right to go to the Cemetery? Continue on the Hwy and right before you cross the Intercoastal Canal on the right is the old ELOI HEBERT HOMESTEAD. The Grand Lake High School is on JEAN BAPTIST HEBERT, Sr. property. So when you visit Grand Lake you are in HEBERT COUNTRY. It is also a good fishing place. A boat landing is run by an HEBERT descendant, called Martin, who is deaf & dumb. We also went to Hayes, LA. and found the Community Cemetery there. We found the graves, Mr. & Mrs. Maurice HEBERT, son of ELOI HEBERT. On the cemetery gate @ Grand Lake there was this sign: Hebert Cemetery "For information on Grand Lake Cemetery contact Mrs. John B.
