Report on the evacuees By NELL COLLIGAN Page 2, The Cameron Parish Pilot, Cameron, La., February 02, 2006 LOOKING FOR THE JEFF DRURYS Friends of Jeff Drury and his wife have asked for information concerning their whereabouts. No one seems to know where they went when they evacuated. The Drurys lived in the subdivision behind the old health unit in Cameron. This week we have news of Joseph “Sip” Duhon and Ina. They are doing well and living in Grand Lake. JODY AND HILDA SAVOIE’S FAMILY Although Jody and Hilda are both deceased, the following paragraphs contain news of the whereabouts of their daughters and granddaughters following the two hurricanes. Some of their family lived in the New Orleans area and were affected by Hurricane Katrina, while others lived in Cameron Parish and were affected by Hurricane Rita. We have news of their daughters, Gloria, Jan, Thania Mae and Maureen. THE HURRICANE KATRINA CREW Jody and Hilda’s daughters who lived in New Orleans evacuated to Cameron Parish following Hurricane Katrina only to have to evacuate from Cameron a few weeks later. Jan Lockwood and her husband, John, lost their home in Lakeview, but the second floor was spared. They are now living in a FEMA trailer in front of their house while repairs are being made. Thania Mae Elliott and her husband, Bill, lost their Lakeview home and are renting a place in Gonzales. Maureen Cruthirds and her husband, Charlie, had a little damage to their home in Harahan, but were able to return home. Jodi Kelly Williams (Gloria’s daughter) and husband, Lin, lost their home in Lakeview and are renting a house in Metairie. THE HURRICANE RITA CREW GLORIA KELLEY, who lived in the subdivision near the school board office in Cameron, is living in a trailer in Grand Lake. She has purchased land in Grand Lake and plans to build a home there. Her daughter, Belinda and husband, Joe DOCKINS, have purchased a lot, next door to Gloria, in Grand Lake. Gloria’s daughter, Debbie and husband, Dave SAVOIE, are also living in a trailer in Grand Lake. Gloria’s other daughter, Vanessa and husband, Gilbert Mudd, are living in Lake Charles but plan to return to Cameron. LAND FOR FEMA TRAILERS IN GRAND LAKE The Billy Johnstons of Grand Lake have offered 12 acres of land in Grand Lake to be used by FEMA, free of charge, for temporary occupancy by Rita evacuees only. This property is large enough to accommodate FEMA campers or larger, family-size trailers. If there are Cameron Parish evacuees who need this type of accommodation, they may make their needs known by phoning Phyllis Johnston at 337-598-4388, or write her at: 181 Klumpp Lane; Lake Charles, La. 70607. Unless Rita evacuees express a need for this type of park, FEMA will not set it up. Please send news for the Column to: 302 Trailwood Lane; Lafayette, La. 70508. Phone: 337-988- 5395. nnadc67@aol.com
