Leven Abshire — 8/18/2002 KAPLAN — Leven Abshire, 76, died at 2:55 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, in Abbeville General Hospital. He was a native of Vermilion Parish and had lived in Lake Charles for more than 50 years. He lived in Grand Lake for seven years before moving to Kaplan two years ago. He was a retired painting contractor. He was the former president of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America and a member of Painters Local 783. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church, where he served as an usher. He was a member and former Grand Knight of St. Margaret’s Knights of Columbus Council 3208 and a member of Monsignor Cramer’s Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the St. Mary of the Lake Knights Columbus Council. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of W.B. Williamson Post 1 of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Ruby A. Abshire of Kaplan; four sons, Kenneth Abshire of Hayes, Va., Terry Abshire of Grand Lake, Troy Abshire of Lewisville, Texas, and Scott Abshire of Huffman, Texas; three daughters, Sandy Mire of Hackberry, Jo Hebert of Grand Lake and Mitsi Taylor of Cameron; four stepsons, Jim Harrington of Houston, Delfred Harrington of Kaplan, Rick Harrington of Mire and L.J. Harrington of Crowley; two stepdaughters, Peggy Lantier of Maurice and Dolores LeBlanc of Lafayette; 41 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Abshire, and his wife, Bernice “Mamma Bea” Abshire. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Margaret Catholic Church. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Barbie — 5/26/2002 BIG LAKE — Lawrence E. “Pappy” Barbie, 74, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, in his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Big Lake. He was a retired construction worker and a commercial fisherman. Survivors include three sons, Lawrence G. Barbie, Danny D. Barbie and E.J. Manning, all of Lake Charles; three daughters, Money Daggett of Elton, Penny Rosie of Montana and Linda Manning of San Francisco, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Benoit infant — 1/30/2002 GRAND CHENIER — Graveside services for Jaylyn Nicole Benoit, infant daughter of Hope Benoit of Creole, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in St. Eugene Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hixson Funeral Home of Creole. Visitation is from 1 p.m. in the cemetery. She died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in a local hospital. Bertrand — 9/12/2002 Geneva Faye Bertrand, 68, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in her residence. She was a native of Creole and had lived in Lake Charles for the past four years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Creole. She was a member of Woodmen of the World and American Legion. Survivors include her husband, Alden Billy Bertrand of Lake Charles; one son, Joseph Curtis Bertrand of Westlake; three daughters, Beverly Salter of Cameron, Brenda Grimm of Lake Charles and Cynthia Bell of Kaplan; two brothers, Oren Boudreaux and Ernie Boudreaux, both of Creole; three sisters, Frances Richard and Annette Baccigalopi, both of Creole, and Christine Bertrand of Lake Charles; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Billeaud, 76, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, in the local hospital. He was a native of Lafayette and a resident of Johnson Bayou. He worked for Mobil Oil Co. for 44 years. Survivors include his wife, Bette Billeaud of Johnson Bayou; one son, Garland Ray Billeaud of Port Lavaca, Texas; two sisters, Mildred Mudd of Cameron and Mary Lee Jinks of Hackberry; four grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Adele L. Billiot — 7/28/2002 Adele Marie LeBlanc Billiot, 63, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002. Many of her relatives live in and around Cameron and surrounding parishes. She lived in Cameron Parish many years before moving to Florida in 1990. She is survived by her husband, Wilfred; two daughters, Lauren and Lilianna; two sons, Steven and Jonathan; two sisters, Mae Simon and Emilie Wymer; and a number of grandchildren. The body was cremated. Bonnie S. Blackett — 8/10/2002 Bonnie Salter Corley Blackett, 90, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in the Creole hospital. She was a native of Florien. She had lived in Creole for five years after moving from Vista, Calif. She lived in Cameron with her niece Doris Turpin Duhon for the past three years. She was the daughter of the late Ross and Ada Salter of Florien. She was a member of South Lake Charles Baptist Church. Survivors include one brother, Ralph Salter of Sulphur, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Archie Corley and John Blackett; two sisters, Odie Salter Rice and Ruby Salter Turpin; and two brothers, Jack Salter and the Rev. Cody Salter. Bonsall — 8/8/2002 CREOLE — Dorothy Marie Bonsall, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in her residence. She was a lifelong resident of Creole. She was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar Society and the Cameron Parish Farm Bureau. Survivors inclue one son, Charles Bonsall of Grand Chenier; two daughters, Geraldine Billiu of Houma and Carolyn Summers of Karnack, Texas; three brothers, Clifford Conner and Alan J. Bonsall Sr. — 8/23/2002 CREOLE — Elton Adam Bonsall Sr., 89, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a native of Grand Chenier, and he had lived in Creole for 57 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was an Army staff sergeant during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, and he served as post commander. He was a member of the VFW. He was a member of the cattlemen’s association and the Farm Bureau. He was a trustee for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and he received the Bishop’s Service Appeal Award and the Knight of St. Gregory Award. Survivors include one son, Elton Bonsall Jr. of Creole; one sister, Viola Lee Brune of Grand Chenier; and three grandchildren, Lane, Laurie and Blake Bonsall. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, from Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Creole. Monsignor Louis Melancon will officiate. Boudreaux — 4/17/2002 CREOLE — Joseph Hubert "Barro" Boudreaux, 83, died Monday, April 15, 2002, in a Lake Charles hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Creole. He served in the Coast Guard in World War II, and he was a member of the Cameron Parish Coast Watchers. He was an oil field worker. He worked as a guide for Hawkins Hunting Club and Crain Bros. Hunting Club for 41 years. He retired from the Cameron Department of Motor Vehicles after 21 years. He was a founding member of and accordion player for the Cajun French band, Barro and the Teardrops, which recorded music from 1972-2000. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Chapter 3014. Survivors include his wife, Ida Marie Swire Boudreaux; four sons, Melvin Joseph of Buffalo, Texas, John "Butch" Marshall of Lake Charles, Larry Paul of Grand Chenier and Thomas "Tommy" Neil of Creole; one sister, Mrs. Veda Boudreaux Conner; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. today, April 17, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Monsignor Louis Melancon will officiate. Cornelia Broussard — 1/24/2002 CREOLE — Funeral services for Cornelia Broussard, 87, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in Bargeman Memorial Church of God in Christ. The Rev. Charles E. Porter will officiate. Burial will be in Bargeman Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Friday in the church. She died Monday, Jan. 20, 2002, in a Lake Charles care center. She was a lifelong resident of Cameron. She was a member of Bargeman Memorial Church of God in Christ. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Lurlie M. Broussard — 6/10/2002 Lurlie Mae Broussard, 71, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in her residence. She was a native of Cameron Parish and had lived in Lake Charles for 45 years. She was an alumna of Creole High School and Matthew’s Business College. She worked at Wilson Motor Company and J.C. Penney for several years. She volunteered at Abraham’s Tent. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, where she was involved in the Ladies Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters and the Resurrection Choir. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Russel Broussard of Lake Charles; four sons, Kirk Broussard of Katy, Texas, Mark Broussard of Sugarland, Texas, Todd Broussard of New York City and Blane Broussard of Lake Charles; three daughters, Lisa Louviere of Carlyss, Tina Fontenot of Taylor Lake Village, Texas, and Michelle Stone of Dallas; one brother, Pierre Thibodeaux of Hot Springs, Ark.; one sister, Ena Adams of Lake Charles; and 12 grandchildren. Brown Jr., 74, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, in his residence. He was a native of Helena, Ark., and he had lived in Holly Beach for more than 25 years. He was a Marine veteran, and he served during the Korean War. He was a self-employed fisherman. Survivors include two sons, Allen Brown of Lexas, Ark., and Ronnie Brown of Holly Beach; two daughters, Lillian Rhodes of Nederland, Texas, and Melissa Lynch of Bridge City, Texas; two sisters, Floridine Smith and Annaline Robinson, both of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Castaine — 6/12/2002 CAMERON — Olive V. Castaine, 80, died Monday, June 10, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a native of Gueydan, and she had lived in Cameron for 65 years. She was a receptionist at the Cameron Hotel from 1982 to 1989. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Altar Society, the Legion of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Survivors include one son, Bobby LaLande of Cameron; one daughter, Brenda Nash of Cameron; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. Dartez — 6/27/2002 NORFOLK, Va. — Robert James Dartez, 33, died Monday, June 17, 2002, in his residence. He was a native of Grand Lake. He served 16 years in the Navy, beginning his career aboard the USS Tennessee. He retired as a chief petty officer. Survivors include his wife, Christina A. Dartez of Norfolk; two sons, Scott Dartez of Grand Lake and Brandon Dartez of Norfolk; two daughters, Jessica Dartez of Grand Lake and Bryanna Dartez of Norfolk; one sister, Kristi Dartez of Grand Lake; his parents, James and Betty Dartez of Grand Lake; and his paternal grandfather, Jerry Dartez of Baton Rouge. Frank Davis — 6/20/2002 Frank Davis, 81, died Friday, June 14, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a native of Grand Chenier, and he lived in Pasadena, Calif., for 35 years. He served in the Army in World War II. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church of Pasadena. Survivors include his wife, Loice Davis of Lake Charles; one son, Kenneth Williams of Los Angeles; two daughters, Cathey Pope of Los Angeles and Lisa Richard of Lake Charles; one brother, Vernon Davis of Pasadena; and seven grandchildren. DeRouen Beatrice Marie DeRouen, 82, died Friday, March 29, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a native of Big Lake and had lived in Lake Charles for many years. She was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society. Survivors include her husband, Dewey DeRouen of Lake Charles; two daughters, Jeanette Daley of Nederland, Texas, and Betty Quebodeaux of Scott; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 1, from St. Margaret Catholic Church. The Rev. Tony Fontenot will officiate. Derouen — 2/17/2002 WELSH — Funeral services for James L. "Jimmy" Derouen, 94, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, from Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church. The Rev. Herbert May will officiate. Burial will be in the church mausoleum under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Visitation is 10 a.m.-9 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mr. Derouen died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in his residence. He was a native of Bell City, where he attended school and ran the commissary on the Illinois Plantation. He moved to Welsh in 1930. He served as Welsh postmaster from 1940 to 1946 and operated Derouen's Jewelry Store from 1946 to 1950. He went to work for the Calcasieu Marine Bank of Welsh in 1949 and was named assistant manager in 1951. In January of 1952, he was named manger of the Cameron branch. He was mayor of Welsh for four years and served on the city council for two years. He was a fourth-degree knight of the Welsh Knights of Columbus. He had served as Boy Scout Master and Sea Scout Master. While living in Cameron, he served as president of the Lion's Club and received the Lion of the Year award. He served as grand knight for the third-degree Knights of Columbus and served as faithful navigator for the fourth-degree Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Rodney (Elaine) Hebert of Welsh, Mrs. Terry (Beverly) Trahan of Moss Bluff, Mrs. Bobby (Glenda) Montie of Creole and Mrs. Francis (Gloria) Vanderwall of Baton Rouge; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Azelia M. Domingue — 9/19/2002 Azelia Domingue, 81, died at 4:03 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a native of Grand Chenier and lived most of her life there. She moved to Jennings nine years ago. She was Catholic. She is survived by three sons and spouses, Wilfred Lee “Pete” and Ann Domingue of Illinois, John and Connie Domingue of Grand Chenier, and Walter Leo and Uvonne Domingue of Jennings; three daughters and spouses, Dorothy and Irvin Lee Landry and Mary Jean Thibodeaux, all Grand Chenier, and Joyce and Carroll Landry of Lake Charles; two sisters, Mary Dirks and Velma Henry, both of Jennings; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Enis Domingue. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, from St. Eugene Catholic Church in Grand Chenier. The Rev. Jules Dronet — 2/17/2002 Funeral services for Jules Dronet, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, from St. Margaret Catholic Church. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. The body will be cremated under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Visitation is 2-10 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Dronet died at 8:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in Lake Charles. He was a native of Erath and lived in Creole most of his life. He was a staff sergeant in the Army and served in World War II. He retired as a carpenter from Savoie Lumber Co. in Creole. He retired as a school bus driver from Cameron Parish School Board. He was a member of VFW Doxey Vincent Post 1019 and American Legion Richard Brother Post 176. He was a member of Pine Shadows Golf Course. He was a former member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Creole, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ena Richard Dronet of Lake Charles; one son, Joseph Ruben Dronet of Lake Charles; one daughter, Linda Gladys Dronet of Lake Charles; two brothers, E.J. Dronet of Cameron and Phillip Dronet of Baldwin, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Dronet Martin of New Iberia and Mrs. Eula Viator of Winnie, Texas; and two grandchildren. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mr. Doucet died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in a local care center. He was a native of Bastile, and he moved from Sweetlake to Iowa 63 years ago. He was a retired rice farmer. He was a member of Woodmen of the World. He was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church. Survivors include three sons, Gerald Doucet and Gary Doucet, both of Iowa, and Randy Doucet of Aiken, S.C.; three daughters, Ellen Corbello of Iowa, Janey Hollis of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Carolyn Conroy of Spring, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Aline T. Duhon — 4/22/2002 Aline T. Duhon, 92, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, in a Sulphur hospital. A native of Rayne, she moved to Cameron Parish in 1916. She had lived in the Lake Charles area since 1939. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Survivors include one son, Aldon Duhon; one brother, Auray Thibodeaux; two sisters, Bernice Guillory and Mrs. Fred (Eula) Manuel, all of Lake Charles; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Duhon died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Sarasota, Fla. He was a native of Lake Charles. He was a graduate of South Cameron High School. He was a member of the Elks in Florida. He was a baseball umpire and a member of the American Umpires Association. He was a member of a pioneer Cameron Parish Family and a descendant of Charles Sallier and Jacob Ryan. He was a graduate of Grand Lake High School and a farmer and cattleman. He was a carpenter and a 50-year, life member of Carpenter’s Local 953. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish and attended Christ the King Chapel. He was a charter member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Knights of Columbus 4562 and served as an usher in the church. He was a member of the Cajun French Music Association. He had been a member of the National Hot Rod Association since 1947, and he won a national drag racing competition in 1961. She owned and operated Shell Art by Mickey for 17 years, and she operated the Volunteer Tourist Center in Constance Beach. She was a past member of the Grand Sultana of the International Order of Alhambra. She was a past member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and she was a lay minister at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He served in the National Guard for several years. He worked for Southern Bell Telephone for 46 years. He retired as a supervisor of vehicle maintenance.
