Lyons, of Vinton; two sons, Donald P. He worked for Crain Brothers for 25 years and DACI for 12 years, and then was self-employed. She was married to the late Emile Nolan Broussard for 55 years. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, a lifelong resident of Hackberry and was employed with Brown's Grocery in Hackberry for 20 years as produce manager. Mrs. Broussard loved both her grandchildren and great grandchildren and also loved to play BINGO. Survivors include three sons, Ernest Broussard and wife Betty of Kinder, Gary Broussard of Grand Chenier and Victor Broussard and wife Joy of Grand Chenier; three daughters, Wilma Feliz and husband Robert of Alvin, TX, Debra Broussard and husband Wendall of Grand Chenier and Barbara East and husband Floyd of Sulphur; two brothers, J.B. and Carrol Nunez, both of Hackberry; four sisters, Mable Heitz of Bastrop, TX, Lona Hindricks of New Roads, LA, Virgina Jinks of Hackberry and Marie Little of Hackberry; 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Emile Nolan Broussard and son Carl Broussard. Whitney John Broussard Born November 25, 1912 Died November 13, 2004 Whitney John Broussard Sr., 91, of Lake Charles died at 11:05 PM Saturday November 13, 2004 in his residence. Whitney was born in Creole, Louisiana to Numa and Helen Conner on November 25, 1912. He was the second of four children Rose, Whitney, Agnes and Claude. Whitney attended school in Creole, graduating in the spring of 1932. In the fall of that year he enrolled in S.L.I. He received a two- year degree and began his teaching career at Hackberry High School in the fall of 1934. He remained there for two years and was then named the first Principal of Cameron Elementary School in July 1936. He continued his schooling for several summers and earned his B.A. degree in Education at S.L.I. in 1939. Mr. Broussard married Clara Ethel Ellender of Bourg on December 29,1936. Whitney taught for 33 years in the Cameron Parish School system. He was principal until Hurricane Audrey in 1957. The school was destroyed, and it was a year before the new school could be completed. Whitney began the new school year as a teacher at West Lake High School. After working for six weeks, he retuned to Cameron to rebuild his motel. A sudden attack of spinal meningitis prevented him from returning to teaching during the 1957-58 school year. When the new school opened in the fall of 1958, Whitney returned in the capacity of classroom teacher. He taught seventh grade until his official retirement on November 27,1967, but served as a substitute until the end of the 1968 school year. He dedicated his life to his family, community, and the improvement of education. In 1954, Whitney struck new ground when he opened Broussard's Motel in Cameron, which he owned and operated until March of 1978. Mr. Broussard is one of the 2 remaining charter members of J.P. Boudoin K.C. Council # 3014 of Creole. He is a member of OLQH Knights if Columbus Council # 4562. He is also a member of Msgr. Cramer's Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. In 1969, Clara and Whitney moved to Lake Charles. They became members of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Mr. Broussard was a member of the Calcasieu-Cameron Retired Teachers' Assembly. Mr. Broussard was preceded in death by his parents Numa and Helen Broussard; two sisters Rose Montie and Agnes Montie; one brother, Claude Broussard and a grandson, David Allen McCall. Survivors include Clara, his wife of 67 years; 5 daughters, Mary Ann Vineyard of Austin, TX, Helen Hughes of Lafayette, LA, and Ethel Fruge, Elaine Trahan and Patricia Gorin all of Lake Charles. Three sons, Whitney J. Broussard, Jr. of Bastrop, LA, David Broussard of Dallas, TX and Dr. Richard Broussard of Lafayette, LA. Twenty grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and one nephew, Kenneth Montie of Creole, also survive Mr. Broussard. LCAP NOv 14, 2004 Section A Pg. 2 Eva Brown Eva LeBleu Brown, 97, of Big Lake, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in a Lake Charles hospital. She was a native of Creole and had lived in Big Lake since 1926. In 1943, she donated the land for and became a charter member of Big Lake Gospel Tabernacle. She is survived by two sons, Elray LeBleu and Harold LeBleu, both of Big Lake; one daughter, Lillie Zimmerman of Gonzales; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held Sunday, Oct. 3 in Johnson Funeral Home. Pastor Garry Mann officiated. Burial was in Pujol Cemetery in Big Lake. Note: Cameron Parish Pilot; Oct 7, 2004, Pg 2 Joseph Ray Burleigh Ray Burleigh passed into God's loving hands July 5, 2004. He was recently diagnosed with bone marrow and kidney disease. Ray was born Jan. 3, 1920, to Albert Ray and Rose Chachere Burleigh in Opelousas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and sisters. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Anita Thompson Burleigh; his sons, Ray Keith and wife, Kay, and Everett Kirk and wife, Julie; and his daughters, Jackie Cheramie and husband, Randy, Pam Scott, Gayle LaFleur and husband, Leon, Cathy Carlos and husband, Duffy. Thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive him. Ray served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 821st Engineers on the Pacific coast. After his tour of duty, he worked for Amoco Oil Company for 30 years and retired. He owned and operated Cameron Fire Equipment for many years before retiring to a life of fishing. He started the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and retired as chief after 30 years of service to his community. It was during his service in the fire department that he initiated several community service organizations such as the rescue unit, in which he aided the community in lowering fire insurance rates. He was an active member in the National Fire Department for 10 years, attending conferences annually to learn new techniques to share with his fellow firefighters to continue improving services to Cameron Parish. Ray was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Cameron, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a Grand Knight for two years. He helped organized several organizations in Cameron Parish, Boy Scouts of America of Cameron, Dog Trials of Cameron Parish, and Cameron Boat Club, in which he helped sponsor boat races in Grand Chenier. While living in Cameron, he was an active and charter member of the Cameron Parish Fur and Wildlife Committee. Ray enjoyed living life to the fullest. After retirement, he and his wife Anita traveled the United States, and they were able to visit all 50 states. They also traveled to Europe, China, Australia, Tahiti, Mexico, Japan and Canada. He and Anita retired to a home on Toledo Bend Lake in Zwolle in 1997, where he enjoyed fishing, gardening, visiting with and helping his neighbors. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Zwolle. Pallbearers will include: his grandsons, Lawrence Burleigh, Randall Cheramie, Michael Cheramie, Adam Scott, Erik Burleigh, Lucas Burleigh and Kyle Scott. Mr. Cohen was born on October 21, 1914 in DeRidder, Louisiana to Elmau and Sally Elizabeth Cohen. His childhood life was spent in Lake Charles where he had a paper route and he lived in Hackberry all of his adult life. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. After graduating from Hackberry High School, he went to work for the Yaunt Lee Oil Company, working in the oil field industry for 38 years and then retiring from Amoco Oil Company as a drilling supervisor. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Harvey (Patricia Cohen) Vaughan of Hackberry; three grandchildren, H. David Vaughan II and wife Elizabeth of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Michael Alan Vaughan and wife Toni of Brandon, Mississippi and Wesley Leon Vaughan of Houston, Texas; and six great- grandchildren. Mr. Constance graduated from McNeese State University and was on the Rodeo Team and the Civil Defense. Mr. Constance was employed at Hercules for 19 years as a process foreman. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne "Unk" Constance. Note: Full Obit in LCAP Dec 27, 2004 Ruby Daigle Funeral services for Ruby Daigle, 89, of Lake Charles, were held at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Monday, Aug. 9. Father Aubrey Guilbeau officiated. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery. Mrs. Daigle died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in a Eunice nursing facility. She was a native of Creole and at an early age she and her family moved to Grand Lake. In 1943 Mrs. Daigle moved to Lake Charles. During WWII, she was a welder in a shipyard in Orange, Tex. She was a housekeeping supervisor for the Belmont Motor Hotel and later a housekeeping supervisor for Moss Regional Hospital. Mrs. Daigle was also a beautician and a fabric store manager. She worked as a sitter for the elderly in her later years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and of Court Lady of the Lake-Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of VFW Post #2130 Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Tony O'Blanc of Sweet Lake And Ching Wasmuth of Eunice; 7 grand-children; 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great- great-grandchildren. He was a past member of Creole Knights of Columbus, Cub-master BSA, coach of elementary baseball and football for many years, and was D.J. for Cameron parish youth for 25 years.
